Checking For Bed Bugs In Alexandria VA
In Alexandria VA, if you have a bed bug infestation, it is best to find it early, before the infestation becomes established or spreads. Treating a minor infestation, while an inconvenience, is far less costly and easier than treating the same infestation after it becomes more widespread.
However, low-level infestations are also much more challenging to find and correctly identify. Other insects, such as carpet beetles, can be easily mistaken for bed bugs. If you misidentify a bed bug infestation, it gives the bugs more time to spread to other areas of the house or hitchhike a ride to someone else's house to start a new infestation.
Bites on the skin are a poor indicator of a bed bug infestation. Bed bug bites can look like bites from other insects (such as mosquitoes or chiggers), rashes (such as eczema or fungal infections), or even hives. Some people do not react to bed bug bites at all.
A more accurate way to identify a possible infestation is to look for physical signs of bed bugs. When cleaning, changing bedding, or staying away from home, look for:
- Rusty or reddish stains on bed sheets or mattresses caused by bed bugs being crushed.
- Dark spots, which are bed bug excrement and may bleed on the fabric like a marker would.
- Bed bug eggs and eggshells, which are tiny (about 1mm), as well as pale yellow shed exoskeletons, that nymphs shed as they grow larger.
- Live bed bugs.
What Do Bed Bugs Look Like In Alexandria VA?
Adult bed bugs are reddish brown in color, wingless, and are about the size of an apple seed. Immature bed bugs can also be seen with the naked eye but they are smaller than adults, and translucent whitish-yellow in color. There are 5 immature or nymphal instar stages.
What Do Bed Bug Bites Look Like In Alexandria VA?
For most people, bedbug bites result in itchy bumps where the bite occurred, within a day of being bitten. The bites usually look like mosquito bites and will appear as a somewhat swollen red spot that might itch.
But the bites will look different from person to person, and some people won’t develop any reaction whatsoever. The same bed bug could bite two different people, and one could have no reaction at all, while the other can have an extreme reaction with a swollen arm or itchy rash. In response to the bite, some people end up developing a rash that looks like eczema.
It’s also possible that you won’t see a reaction the first time a bedbug bites since it sometimes can take the body a while to react. Some people will have an immediate reaction, while for others it could take two weeks to emerge. Your body will likely become more sensitive to bed bug bites over time, and if you get bitten repeatedly, it could be only a matter of seconds before your body shows a response.
Alexandria VA
Alexandria is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia in the United States. Located along the western bank of the Potomac River, Alexandria is approximately 7 miles south of downtown Washington DC.
Like the rest of Northern Virginia, as well as Central Maryland, modern Alexandria has been influenced by its proximity to the U.S. Capitol. It is largely populated by professionals working in the federal civil service, in the U.S. military, or for one of the many private companies which contract to provide services to the federal government. One of Alexandria's largest employers is the U.S. Department of Defense. Another is the Institute for Defense Analyses. In 2005, the United States Patent and Trademark Office moved to Alexandria, and in 2017, so did the headquarters of the National Science Foundation.
The historic center of Alexandria is known as Old Town. With its concentration of boutiques, restaurants, antique shops and theaters, it is a major draw for all who live in Alexandria as well for visitors. Like Old Town, many Alexandria neighborhoods are compact and walkable. It is the 7th largest and highest-income independent city in Virginia.
A large portion of adjacent Fairfax County, mostly south but also west of the city, has Alexandria mailing addresses. However, this area is under the jurisdiction of Fairfax County's government and separate from the independent city. The city is therefore sometimes referred to as the "City of Alexandria" to avoid confusion. Additionally, neighboring Arlington County was formerly named "Alexandria County" before it was renamed by the Virginia General Assembly in 1920 to reduce confusion with the city.
