Are Wasps the Same as Hornets?

While often confused with yellow jackets and hornets, wasps are their own distinct type of stinging insect and are known for their aggressive behavior. The most common type of wasp found in the Washington DC area is the European paper wasp.

How Do I Know that I Have Wasps?

European paper wasps have black and yellow stripes up and down their entire body, but their most distinctive feature is their very small, pinched waist. Wasps often make their nests inside light sockets and in the eaves of roofs.

Are Wasps Around All Year?

In Washington DC, wasps are mostly seasonal, with spring and summer being their most active time of the year. Towards the end of summer, usually by late August-early September, wasps start to look for places to hibernate through the colder months. However, wasps are known to return to their old nests, which is why you should be proactive in removing any wasp nests that you may find outside your home.

How Do I Get Rid Of A Wasp's Nest?

Because of their aggressive nature, you should never disturb an existing wasp population or try to remove a wasp’s nest by yourself. The safest way to remove wasps and their nests from your home is always going to be to call a professional. Our technicians at Miche Pest Control are highly trained in the safe and effective removal of wasps’ nests to prevent you, your family, and your pets from getting stung.

How Can I Prevent Wasps From Coming Back?

The best way to prevent wasps from returning to your home is with a quarterly pest control plan. Once we’ve gotten the wasps under control during your initial pest control service, we recommend continuous quarterly treatment of the exterior of your home to prevent the resurgence of any wasp populations. Keeping exterior light sockets and the eaves of your home clean year-round, keeping outdoor trash cans covered, and removing puddles of water from your yard will also help prevent wasps from returning to your home. You should also be diligent about keeping any holes in your yard filled, as some wasps are known to make their nests in the ground.

How Dangerous Are Wasps?

Wasps can be very aggressive and are known to sting when they feel disturbed or bothered. Many people are known to be allergic to the venom from wasp stings and may need to seek medical attention after being stung.

What Should I Do If I Get Stung?

Unlike honeybees, wasps do not die when they sting, so they may sting multiple times in an attack. You should do your best to remove yourself quickly and calmly from the situation. Wash the sting with soap and water and apply ice on and off to reduce swelling and inflammation. If you think you may be allergic to the venom in the sting, you should seek medical attention immediately.

Washington DC

Washington DC, formally known as the District of Columbia, more commonly known as DC, is the official capital of the United States of America. It is located on east side of the Potomac River, bordering Maryland and Virginia. The United States Congress held its first session there in 1800. The city was named after George Washington,  a Founding Father and the first president of the United States. The federal district was named after Columbia, a female personification of our nation. As the seat of the US federal government and several international organizations, DC is an important world political capital. It is one of the most visited cities in the US, with over 24 million visitors in 2019.

The District of Columbia is not a part of any U.S. state. The signing of the Residence Act on July 16, 1790, approved the creation of a capital district located along the Potomac River near the country's Atlantic Coast. The City of Washington was founded in 1791 to serve as the national capital. In 1801, the land, formerly part of Maryland and Virginia (at the time including the settlements of Georgetown and Alexandria), officially became recognized as the federal district. In 1846, Congress returned to Virginia the portion of Washington DC that had been originally ceded by Virginia, including the cities of Alexandria and Arlington; in 1871, it created a single municipal government for the remaining portion of the district.

DC is divided into quadrants (NW, NE, SE, and SW), centered on the United States Capitol (aka the Capitol Building or Capitol Hill), with 8 wards, 37 Advisory Neighborhood Commissions, and 127 named neighborhoods. It is the 20th-most populous city in the US. Commuters from the surrounding suburbs in Maryland and Northern Virginia raise the city's daytime population to more than one million during the workweek. Washington DC's metropolitan area is the country's sixth-largest metropolitan area, and includes portions of Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.
