What Should Every Resident Of Gaithersburg MD Know About Rats?
According to Chapter 39 of the Montgomery County Code, "It shall be unlawful for anyone to allow their property to be infested with rats or to be in such condition as to contribute to an existing or potential rat infestation." Rat control is important, because rats are known carriers of disease; when they are in close proximity to humans, they are a public health concern. They can damage structures and personal items, potentially causing electrical fires by chewing on wires, and are known to contaminate food supplies. The Health Department of Montgomery County MD lists 4 common signs of rats in Gaithersburg MD:
- Burrows - Rats create holes in the ground, generally between 2 and 4 inches in diameter.
- Droppings - Rats have fecal droppings that are rounded to tapered in shape on each end. These droppings are between 3/8 and 3/4 inches long, and 1/4 inch across.
- Runways - Rats often frequent the same travel areas, creating worn paths in vegetation, close to walls, fences, and walkways as they travel from their nest to the food source(s).
- Tracks - Rats will sometimes leave footprints in mud, dust, fresh dirt, or snow. Rat footprints are approximately 1/2 inch across, with 5 toes visible in their prints.
Rats only need a half inch opening to gain entry into a home or another structure. For professional rodent control services, give us a call today!
3 More Things Gaithersburg MD Residents Ought To Know About Rodents
You might think you know everything there is to know about rodents, but do you really? Here are three facts that many people may not know about these unwanted furry pests.
Mice and rats are different. Mice are typically much smaller than rats. Their tails, bodies, and feet are all much smaller. They also have different fur colors, eye shapes, and nose shapes. Even their preferred habits differ!
There are multiple kinds of rodents. In addition to mice and rats being different, there are a variety of both! Different kinds live in different environments and their behaviors and needs change depending on the species.
Rodents can get in through almost any opening. They gnaw on things to keep their constantly growing front teeth from getting too large. They can make even a hole the size of a dime larger by chewing through it.
You can’t handle a rodent infestation on your own. Mousetraps can only do so much. They may stop the rodents traveling through your kitchen, but they will not eliminate the rodents and their babies hidden in your walls. For a rodent solution that works, choose Miche Pest Control. We use a combination of inspections, baits, traps, and seals to keep rodents from running rampant. Call Miche to speak with a representative about your options for rodent control!
Miche Pest Control provides rodent control services for mice, rats, and voles in Gaithersburg MD and the surrounding areas. We get rid of rodents fast by using a combination of trapping, entry point exclusion, and outside bait stations. Included in your first rodent control service from Miche Pest Control:
- Entry Point Inspection
- Sealing Rodent Entry Points
- Trapping Mice & Rats Inside
- Tamper-Resistant Bait Stations Outside
We use tamper-resistant bait stations combined with products that are registered with the EPA, and labeled for use in and around homes, day cares, and pet kennels. The first service gets rid of any existing rats, mice, or voles, and immediately starts working to keep rodents from coming back after they've been eliminated. A couple months later, once the bait starts to deteriorate or run out and rodent populations start rebounding, mice and rats usually come back - that's why we do six services per year, and more if you need. If you're having issues with rodents in between regular services, just let us know and as needed, we'll go back out in between services at no extra cost.
Guide To Minimizing Mosquitoes In Gaithersburg MD
With the risk of catching a disease from a mosquito bite, it stands to reason that you want to keep them off of your property. But how do you do that when mosquitoes breed so rapidly? Here are a few tips:
Landscape often. Cutting overgrown branches, trimming bushes, and mowing lawns will remove nesting opportunities for mosquitoes.
Remove any stagnant water. Mosquitoes are attracted to standing water in all forms, so make sure you get rid of it. Check hollow logs and stumps, birdbaths, and tire swings. Make sure to clean out your gutters too.
Plant herbs and flowers that repel mosquitoes around your home such as basil, catnip, garlic, lemon balm, or lavender.
Though these preventative measures may curb your mosquito population slightly, they certainly won't eliminate it altogether. To get rid of mosquitoes in your yard, contact Miche Pest Control. Our well-trained technicians can identify the source of a mosquito infestation and what attracts them to your property. They will use a fogging system and/or growth regulator treatment to eliminate them and prevent them from reproducing. We’ll handle the mosquito treatment process so you don’t have to, and we’ll come back if it doesn’t work.

If you're having issues with mosquitoes in between regular services, just let us know and as needed, we'll go back out in between services at no extra cost.
What Problems Can Termites Cause In Gaithersburg MD?
You might have termites and not even know it! Termites are notorious for staying hidden and causing extreme damage before you ever find it. No wooden structure in your home is safe if termites get inside. They’ll munch away at anything wooden, and sometimes, they’ll even go after drywall, insulation, wallpaper glue, and paper products. Termites can completely destroy your home if you aren’t careful.
Termites live in a caste system where they reproduce quickly to grow their colony. Each group within this system has a unique job making these insects particularly efficient. Workers make up the largest number of termites within the system. They chew through cellulose in wood to expand the nest and bring food back to the queen. Soldiers protect the nest with their large heads and mandibles, making sure that the king and queen stay safe. Lastly, once a colony is established, swarmers or alates leave the colony to reproduce and develop a colony elsewhere in your home.
In a short amount of time, termites can cause extensive damage to your home. Therefore, it's important to have a professional inspect your property for possible termite activity. Contact our friendly experts at Miche Pest Control for termite control today to stop an infestation before it starts!

Gaithersburg, officially the City of Gaithersburg, is a city in Montgomery County, Maryland. Gaithersburg is the fourth-largest incorporated city in the state, behind Baltimore, Frederick, and Rockville. Gaithersburg is located to the northwest of Washington DC, and is considered a suburb and a primary city within the Washington–Arlington–Alexandria, DC–VA–MD–WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. Gaithersburg was incorporated as a town in 1878 and as a city in 1968. Gaithersburg is noted for its ethnic and economic diversity; WalletHub in 2016 ranked it first among the 313 largest U.S. cities for ethnic diversity and second for social class diversity.
Gaithersburg is divided into east and west sections, separated by Interstate 270. The eastern section of the city is older and is the original portion of the town before more recent growth. Landmarks and buildings from that time can still be seen in many places but especially in the historic central business district of Gaithersburg called "Olde Towne". The east side also includes Lakeforest Mall, City Hall, and the Montgomery County Fair grounds, and Bohrer Park (a well-known joint community recreation center and outdoor water park for kids and families). The west side of the city has many wealthier neighborhoods that were designed with smart growth techniques and embrace New Urbanism. These include the award-winning Kentlands community, the Lakelands community, and the Washingtonian Center (better known as Rio), a popular shopping/business district. Two New Urbanism communities are under construction, including Watkins Mill Town Center (Casey East and West), and the massive "Science City".
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is headquartered in Gaithersburg directly west of I-270. Other major employers in the city include IBM, Lockheed Martin Information Systems and Global Services business area headquarters, AstraZeneca, and the French multinational corporation, Sodexo. Gaithersburg is also the location of the garrison of the United States Army Reserve Legal Command.
The most prominent highways serving Gaithersburg are Interstate 270 and Interstate 370. I-270 is the main highway leading northwest out of metropolitan Washington DC, beginning at Interstate 495 (the Capital Beltway) and proceeding northwestward to Interstate 70 in Frederick. I-370 is a short spur, starting just west of I-270 in Gaithersburg and heading east to its junction with Maryland Route 200. Via MD 200, I-370 connects Gaithersburg with Interstate 95 near Laurel. Maryland Route 355 was the precursor to I-270 and follows a parallel route. It now serves as the main commercial roadway through Gaithersburg and neighboring communities. Other state highways serving Gaithersburg include Maryland Route 117, Maryland Route 119 and Maryland Route 124. Maryland Route 28 passes just outside the Gaithersburg corporate limits.
