What Kinds Of Rodents Are The Most Common In Centreville VA?

In Centreville VA, the two most common commensal rodents are the house mouse and the Norway rat.

The house mouse usually makes a nest in stored materials indoors, but can also live outside, burrowing in areas around fields and lawns. Mice often become a problem in the fall when they enter homes to seek warmth. Mice tend to nest only 10 to 30 feet from their food supply. Mice can squeeze through an opening as small as a nickel!

The Norway rat digs and travels through burrows, and will nest underground up to 150 feet from its food supply. It can make a nest in your home by gnawing holes in sheds, walls, etc., or by squeezing through cracks and crevices in foundations, vents, etc. Rats can squeeze through an opening as small as a quarter!

The most common signs of rats and mice are the evidence they leave behind, such as burrows, fecal droppings, tracks, chewed-out holes in walls, chewed wires, urine stains and nesting materials. You are more likely to see or hear them shortly after dark and in the early morning.

What Are the Signs Of A Termite Infestation In Centreville VA?

In Centreville VA, the most common species of termite is the eastern subterranean termite. Subterranean termite damage can be extensive, and may compromise the integrity of the wood found within your home. It is important to know the signs of an termite infestation so that if you're affected, you can take action as quickly as possible to avoid further damage.

Termite Wings Inside or Outside Your Home

Termite wings may be the first sign of an infestation that you can find. Reproductive termites ("alates" or "swarmers") have wings, that enable them to fly off, reproduce, and begin a new colony. Once a newly mated queen termite has found a suitable nesting environment, she will shed her wings, so she can crawl into tiny cracks and crevices. If you see piles of wings inside or outside of your home, it is possible that your home may be infested, or that there is heavy termite activity in the area. If these wings are found, we recommend getting a professional termite inspection.

Mud Tubes Near or In Your Home

Subterranean termites require high humidity levels to survive, so they frequently build mud tubes to protect themselves from the outside environment and maintain the moisture levels they need while they forage, looking for food (anything wood) in your home. You may notice them crossing the patio of your home, leading up the outside of your home, or even on the inside - in the garage, bathroom, kitchen, or any other location where they may have access to the moisture they need. These tubes are usually thin and can be easily missed.

Bubbling and Peeling Paint

Termites are notorious for the amount of damage they can cause to the wood in your home. They eat wood from the inside out, so at first, you may not notice any evidence of their activity. Paint bubbles or peels when it's exposed to moisture, so when subterranean termites create their mud tubes near a painted, wooden surface, the paint may bubble or peel, indicating that subterranean termites are present.

Sometimes, the structural integrity of the wood has already become severely compromised by hidden termite damage when the paint starts to bubble and peel. This is most common around doorways, windows, and baseboards. If you have painted wooden siding, the cracks or bubbles may appear there, as well.

While not dangerous, stink bugs have certainly earned their name. They are, in fact, quite annoying to deal with due to their disgusting odor. Use these tips to keep them off your property and out of your home:

  • Reduce outdoor lighting and light leakage. Turn off porch lights when not in use and close blinds at night.
  • Fix leaks and reduce moisture. Water attracts stink bugs to a home.
  • Inspect your home for possible entry points and seal any openings, cracks, and crevices; stink bugs can hide in these spaces.

Centreville VA

Centreville is a census-designated place (CDP) in Fairfax County, Virginia, and a suburb of Washington DC. Centreville is approximately 20 miles west of Washington DC. The town of Centerville (shortly thereafter spelled Centreville) was established in 1792 on the turnpike road at the village of Newgate by the Virginia General Assembly in response to petitions by local landowners. The petitioners reasoned that a town on the turnpike road leading from the Northwest Territory and centrally located to Alexandria, Colchester, Dumfries, Middleburg, George Town (later Georgetown), Fauquier Court House (later Warrenton), and Leesburg would be convenient. The town acquired its name due to its central location. James Hardage Lane, one of the landowners, conceived the idea of the town as a way to provide financial support to his widow and their children. At the town's inception, it was within the boundary of Loudoun County, Virginia, and became part of Fairfax County, Virginia, in 1798 when the boundary between the two counties shifted. Town development established a pattern of mixed residential and commercial use. Frame houses, several taverns, stores, blacksmith shops, tanyards, and a school house were constructed on the 1/2-acre town lots.

Centreville is served by three major roads. US Route 29, the main artery through the town, enters Centreville from the west. Virginia Route 28 enters from the south and interchanges with US Route 29 in between Centreville's two main shopping centers. SR 620 (Braddock Road) has several stretches of pavement in Centreville. Interstate 66 comes from the south-west and interchanges with both routes before heading toward Washington DC in the east or western Virginia. The three roads are part of an interesting, if not frustrating traffic pattern. Drivers heading north on SR 28 are able to exit onto Interstate 66 eastbound, but they must use a one-mile stretch of US 29 to access the westbound side of the Interstate. Likewise, eastbound Interstate 66's Exit 53 only provides access to SR 28 northbound; one must use Exit 52 and the same stretch of US 29 to reach SR 28 south.
