Guide To Rodent Prevention In Bowie MD
Mice and rats are some of the most troublesome pests to have in your home. They eat anything and chew through everything, creating all kinds of damage around your home. Even worse, they can spread lots of terrible diseases, which is especially risky if you have curious pets or rambunctious children. Use this quick rodent prevention guide to make sure you’re protected from this potential threat:
- Clean up around problem areas. Kitchens are the most common place to find rodents due to the easier access to food, water, and hiding spaces. Keep this area as clean as possible, especially before you go to sleep or leave your home for a period of time. Bathrooms also need particular attention.
- Get rid of any possible entry points outside. Rodents are constantly chewing and can get into your home through an opening the size of a dime! Inspect your home for small openings, and if possible, seal or cover them to prevent rodent access.
- Keep your lawn, shrubs, and tree branches trimmed. Rodents can use these to get closer to your home. They can even jump on your roof and climb in through your chimney!
- Eliminate moisture in and around your home. Rodents, like many pests, can’t survive without access to water. Leaking pipes, clogged gutters, and waterlogged debris outside can all attract rodents to your home.
If you’re struggling to tackle a rodent infestation alone, give Miche Pest Control a call. We use a combination of indoor trapping, entry point exclusion, and outdoor bait stations to break up the rodent population and get them out of your home.

Mosquito Prevention Tips Everyone In Bowie MD Should Know About
Don’t mess around with mosquitoes, especially in Bowie. The mosquitoes here are relentless, and they spread some nasty diseases: West Nile, Zika, Lyme, and ehrlichiosis. The best way to fight them is to stay informed! These three tips will help you fight off mosquitoes around your Bowie home:
- Mosquitoes are attracted to dark colors. Black, navy, crimson – these are all offenders that bring mosquitoes right to you. Lighter colors will dissuade them from getting close and have the added benefit of lowering your temperature.
- Mosquitoes breed in stationary water. They don’t need much either – just a few inches of stagnant water can hold their eggs. If you have ponds or still creeks near your property, mosquitoes are probably using it to breed.
- Mosquitoes are attracted to specific scents. Sweat and floral perfumes are especially attractive to them, but they are also interested in people who eat lots of salt, drink alcohol, or have a higher body temperature.
With all the risks mosquitoes pose, getting them off your property is extremely important. That’s why you should contact our experts at Miche Pest Control. We use backpack fogging of greenery and granular treatments in water to help eliminate mosquitoes. Even if you just need a one-time mosquito control treatment for special events, we can help you.

What Kinds Of Termites Are Found In Bowie MD?
By far the most common species of termite in Bowie MD is the eastern subterranean termite. Subterranean termites threaten homes across the country, as they’re found in every state in the U.S except Alaska. Termites are a destructive pest that cannot be eradicated with do-it-yourself measures. In fact, termites lead to more than $5 billion in property damage each year in the United States, a cost typically not covered by homeowner’s insurance.
Subterranean termites can cause the most damage of any termite species. These termites build distinctive tunnels, often referred to as “mud tubes,” to reach food sources and protect themselves from open air. They eat wood 24 hours a day, seven days a week, using their saw-toothed jaws to bite off small fragments of wood one piece at a time. Over time, subterranean termites can critically damage a building structure, sometimes causing a total collapse.
Subterranean termite infestations can occur on the inside or exterior of the home. There are several telltale signs of a termite infestation. One sign is the presence of mud tubes on the exterior of the home. Mud tubes look like long tunnels made of wood and soil, which the termites construct to protect them from drying out as they travel. Other signs of a subterranean termite infestation include soft wood in the home that sounds hollow when tapped, darkening or blistering of wood structures, uneven or bubbling paint, and small piles of feces that resemble sawdust near a termite nest. Discarded wings near doors or on windowsills also indicate that termite swarmers have entered and infested the home.

Bowie is a city in Prince George's County, Maryland. Bowie has grown from a small railroad stop to the largest municipality in Prince George's County, and the fifth most populous city and third largest city by area in the US state of Maryland. In 2014, CNN Money ranked Bowie 28th in its Best Places to Live (in the United States) list.
The city of Bowie owes its existence to the railway. In 1853, Colonel William Duckett Bowie obtained a charter from the Maryland legislature to construct a rail line into Southern Maryland. In 1869, the Baltimore & Potomac Railroad Company began the construction of a railroad from Baltimore to Southern Maryland, terminating in Pope's Creek. The area had already been dotted with small farms and large tobacco plantations in an economy based on agriculture and slavery. In 1870, Ben Plumb, a land speculator and developer, sold building lots around the railroad junction and named the settlement Huntington City. By 1872, the line was completed, together with a "spur" to Washington DC and the entire line through Southern Maryland was completed in 1873.
In 1880, Huntington City was rechartered as Bowie, named for Colonel Bowie's son and business partner Oden Bowie, the former Governor of Maryland and then-president of the Baltimore & Potomac Railroad. In the early days the land was subdivided by developers into more than 500 residential building lots, to create a large town site at a junction of the Baltimore and Potomac's main line to southern Maryland, and the branch line to Washington DC.
Bowie has an area of 16 square miles and about 50,000 residents with nearly 2,000 acres set aside as parks or open space. It has 72 ball fields, three community centers, an ice arena at Allen Pond Park, the Bowie Town Center, the 800-seat Bowie Center for the Performing Arts, a 150-seat theatrical playhouse, a golf course, and three museums.
Bowie's rail town history is on display via the Huntington Railroad Museum, within the local rail station's restored railroad buildings. In 2006, the city reopened the Bowie Building Association building, a small brick and block structure constructed circa 1930, as a Welcome Center; it originally housed the Bowie Building Association, which helped finance much of the community's early development.
Bowie is served by several significant highways. The most prominent of these is Interstate 595/US Route 50, the John Hanson Highway, which follows an east–west route through the city. Via I-595/US 50, Bowie has direct connections westward to Washington DC and eastward to Annapolis and the Eastern Shore of Maryland. US Route 301 and Maryland Route 3 skim the eastern edge of the city, providing connections southward to Waldorf and La Plata and northward to Baltimore. Other state highways serving the city include Maryland Route 197, Maryland Route 214, Maryland Route 450 and Maryland Route 564. It is served by Bowie State station on MARC's Penn Line.
