Mosquitoes & Ticks

What are mosquitoes & ticks?

Mosquitoes have slender, fly-like bodies with long legs and narrow wings covered in fine hair. They have extended mouthparts called proboscises that they use for piercing and feeding. Their color patterns are species-specific; most species are black, dark brown, or black and white. Mosquitoes are parasitic pests, although only the females who consume blood. Ticks are also parasitic pests; however, the blood of people, pets, and wild animals is their only source of food. They use their specialized, biting mouthparts to feed. Adults are wingless and have oval-shaped bodies with eight legs. Two of the most common species of ticks living throughout greater Fairfax, Virginia include deer ticks and wood ticks.

Deer tick
Deer ticks are a very small species of tick, they are a dark reddish-orange color and have darker almost black legs. Deer ticks are commonly found in and around wooded areas. As their name suggests adults primarily feed on the blood of white-tailed deer. But, they will also feed on dogs, cats, rodents, and humans.

Wood tick
Wood ticks are also commonly known as American dog tick. They are brown with whitish or yellowish colored markings. Their favorite host is the domestic dog, but they will also feed on the blood of a variety of other animals and people.

Are mosquitoes & ticks dangerous?

Yes, both mosquitoes and ticks are considered to be dangerous. These pests are a threat because of the diseases they are capable of spreading. Mosquitoes here in greater Fairfax, VA and all throughout the United States spread things like encephalitis, West Nile virus and Zika virus; they also transmit parasitic heartworms to dogs, which has the potential to be fatal. Deer ticks spread Lyme disease, and wood ticks spread diseases like Rocky Mountain spotted fever and tularemia.

Why do I have a mosquito & tick problem?

Mosquitoes live, breed, and feed outside, and can find their way onto any property. Properties with areas of standing water are most attractive to mosquitoes, as this is where females lay their eggs. Ticks are introduced onto your property by wild animals like deer, mice, raccoons, squirrels, and skunks, and thrive on properties that offer dark, moist areas for them to hide out in. Ticks may lay eggs on your property before they attach to another animal, but most species are unable to live successfully inside of our homes.

Where will I find mosquitoes & ticks?

Mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk, swarming around areas of standing water and feeding on flowering vegetation or the blood of humans and animals. During the middle of the day when temperatures are at their highest point, mosquitoes rest in tall grasses and other areas of dense vegetation. Mosquitoes are mainly outdoor pests but will sometimes find their way inside through open doors and windows, holes in screens, and gaps around windows and doors while searching for food.

Ticks hide out in shady, humid areas. They are typically found in high numbers in spots where wooded areas meet lawns. They also wait in tall grasses, vegetation around ponds and lakes, and in ditches along roadways for new hosts that they can crawl onto. Once on a host, ticks will latch on and feed until their bodies become swollen.
