Crickets in your home can be a loud, annoying nuisance. No matter what type of crickets have invaded your home, they can be tricky to spot and even more difficult to get rid of. For the best pest control near you, contact us at Miche Pest Control today. We can’t wait to serve you.

How And Why Crickets Chirp

Crickets are more of a nuisance than they are dangerous or destructive. They are orthopterous insects of the family Gryllidae, and are considered to be a common plant and household pest. Cricket size ranges from ¾ of an inch to 1 ¼ inch long. There are three types of crickets that will often find their way inside your home: house crickets, field crickets, and camel crickets (also known as the cave cricket). Of those three kinds of crickets, only house crickets and field crickets sing.

Here are some cricket facts to explain how and why crickets chirp. A sound is produced when a male cricket rubs a sharp edge at the base of one of his front wings. At the same time, he has a file-like type of ridge located on the underside of his other wing. This rubbing movement makes the chirping noise that most crickets are known for. Crickets will either sing a call to attract female crickets, a mating song, or an aggressive song that tells male crickets to stay away. Additionally, the higher the temperature is, the faster crickets will chirp.

Crickets In Your Home Can Be More Than Just Annoying

Thankfully, crickets aren’t known to be dangerous or venomous to humans, so that’s one less thing to worry about if they’ve already made their way into your home. However, if you’ve spotted crickets in your home, you’ll know that they can be quite irritating to coexist with. Although chirping is harmless (albeit annoying), crickets can also chew through fabrics, and cause significant damage if an infestation were to occur. You will often find the majority of damage on fabrics and materials that are made of silk, nylon, rayon, cotton, wool, or linen. Crickets can also damage different furs and rubber materials. Additionally, camel crickets will usually stay away from fabrics, but instead feast on any paper they can get their hands on.

How And Why Crickets Find Their Way Into Our Homes

Most crickets usually find their way inside our homes by accident, but there are steps you can take to prevent any crickets from being attracted into your home. First, ensure that all doors fit tightly. Caulk or screen any vents, crawl space entrances, window frames, and plumbing or wiring entrances.

You also want to make sure that you mow your lawn regularly, and that all leaf, brick, and wood piles are cleaned up and away from your home. Finally, keep in mind that house and field crickets are attracted to light. To prevent crickets from invading your home, invest in shades and drapes, and reduce your use of any outdoor lights, like porch lights.

Customer Reviews

I switched from another pest control company due to high pressure sales/bad billing practices, and switched to Miche. They have been excellent. Excellent customer service, very effective pest treatments, competitive pricing. I highly recommend.
