Many people can become startled when they see a silverfish wriggling through their homes. These small insects have an odd and unique appearance that can be quite intimidating to some people. While they may look scary, they are not out to cause harm to people or their pets. Instead, they will damage your belongings.

If you feel that you may be dealing with silverfish, an experienced pest control specialist can help you get rid of them quickly. At Miche Pest Control, we can help you determine whether or not silverfish have taken up residence in your home.

What Are Silverfish?

Silverfish may look like something from outer space, but they are actually a type of insect. They have long, slender bodies that taper off at the end. Their raindrop-shaped body is covered in metallic silvery scales that give this bug its fish-like appearance.

The reason why most people find the silverfish bug so intimidating is because of its three long appendages that sprout out from the end of its body. While these tail-like limbs may look like they could be painful, they are not used to sting or harm people or pets in any way. Instead, the silverfish will use these appendages as a type of antenna that is used to get a better understanding of the silverfish's surroundings.

Are Silverfish Harmful?

Silverfish are not considered to be dangerous insects. However, that doesn't mean that they are completely harmless. Throughout a silverfish's life, it will molt several times. When it sheds its scales, it will secrete a yellow powder that contains tropomyosin, which can cause severe allergic reactions in some people. This powder can be found on furniture, clothing, bedding, and other areas of your home. Also, if silverfish come into contact with your food, they may contaminate it without you realizing it.

Silverfish also like to snack on starchy foods and have even been known to eat glue and clothing. If you have a silverfish infestation, you may notice holes in your books, clothes, sheets, furniture, wallpaper, and other objects in your home.

Why Do Silverfish Invade Homes?

Silverfish will come into your home looking for food or water. If they are able to access vegetables, flour, and grains, they want to stay in your home indefinitely. They are also attracted to warm and moist areas. This is the main reason why many people will find silverfish in their bathrooms, basements, and other humid areas.
