Which Hornets Sting And Which Ones Don't? Identifying Stinging Insects In Gaithersburg

There are many types of stinging insects in our area, and they can be challenging to differentiate from each other. But correctly identifying what species you are dealing with is essential to proper removal and prevention.

Hornets are one type of stinging insect, but few realize they are wasps. We refer to hornets and wasps differently because of their size and aggressiveness. The only true hornet species in our area are European hornets.

European hornets are an invasive species originally from Europe and Asia. This pest is identifiable by the following traits:

  • As some of the largest wasps, workers are about 1 inch long, while the queen can be 1 to 1 1/2 inches long.
  • They have red and yellow heads with brown, red, and yellow bodies.

Besides European hornets, there are also bald faced hornets, which are wasps similar in size and temperament to the hornet.

Unless you have experience, you may not be able to identify hornets correctly, so allow our experts at Miche Pest Control to provide proper identification.

How Dangerous Are Hornets In Gaithersburg?

As an invasive species, European hornets are known to cause damage to different trees and shrubs as they remove the bark to access sap and use the bark to build nests. While these pests can be dangerous and harmful, they also play an essential role in the environment.

Hornets are predators, feeding on flies, grasshoppers, caterpillars, crickets, and other crop-damaging insects. They are beneficial and help keep other pest populations under control.

While hornets are more dangerous than other types of wasps, they don't attack purposely and usually leave people alone. Instead, hornets will sting when they feel threatened. When this happens, hornets can sting multiple times due to their smooth stingers.

A sting from one of these pests will be sharp and painful and usually have mild swelling. But some people are allergic to stinging insects and can experience a worse reaction that can include anaphylaxis. If you see hornets on your property, don't try to handle them yourself. Look to Miche Pest Control for assistance with hornets and other stinging insects.

Why Stinging Insect Infestations In Gaithersburg Are Best Left To Professionals

People often attempt to knock down, spray, cover, or remove nests independently when it comes to stinging insects like hornets. While these methods may seem like the easiest and cheapest option, they can put you and others in danger of being attacked by these pests. It's best to leave stinging insect removal and control to the experts like our technicians at Miche Pest Control.

Hornets are a pest covered under our quarterly residential pest control services, which provide the following treatments every three months:

  • Spider web removal
  • Wasp and hornet nest removal
  • Perimeter power spray and granular application on the exterior of your home
  • Crack and crevice treatments outside

You and your family's safety is our top priority, so we start with exterior treatments to stop pests before they make entry to reduce the products and treatments needed on the interior of your home.

Our services come with a pest-free guarantee, which means we will return and re-treat if pests remain active between scheduled services. Re-treatment comes at no additional cost to you!

Contact us at Miche Pest Control to learn more about our residential services and how we can help implement a protective barrier around your Gaithersburg home.

How To Keep Hornets Away From Your Gaithersburg Property

Miche Pest Control's residential services are the best way to remove and prevent hornets on your Gaithersburg property, but our experts recommend regular preventative measures. Using these tips will help make your yard less attractive to hornets and other stinging insects:

  • Eliminate potential nesting sites: Removing the places where hornets can build their nests is essential to deterring them. You can do this by clearing away tree stumps, fallen trees, woodpiles, overground shrubbery, and branches.
  • Eliminate food sources and moisture: Reducing food and water will help prevent hornets from making themselves home on your property, so keep garbage cans closed, treat gardens for pests, and remove standing water.
  • Eliminate entry points: While hornets don't often build nests inside, it can happen, so you should inspect the exterior of your home for cracks and crevices, repair damaged screens, and fill in any other gaps where insects can get inside.

Along with removing places where hornets can nest, you should also check under outdoor furniture, eaves, decks, railings, and other similar areas for hornet activity. You should contact us at Miche Pest Control if you see any new nests forming.

Gaithersburg MD

Gaithersburg, officially the City of Gaithersburg, is a city in Montgomery County, Maryland. Gaithersburg is the fourth-largest incorporated city in Maryland, behind Baltimore, Frederick, and Rockville. Gaithersburg is located to the northwest of Washington DC, and is considered a suburb and a primary city within the Washington–ArlingtonAlexandria, DC–VA–MD–WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. Gaithersburg was incorporated as a town in 1878 and as a city in 1968. Gaithersburg is noted for its ethnic and economic diversity; WalletHub in 2016 ranked it first among the 313 largest U.S. cities for ethnic diversity and second for social class diversity.

Gaithersburg is divided into east and west sections, separated by Interstate 270. The eastern section of the city is older and is the original portion of the town before more recent growth. Landmarks and buildings from that time can still be seen in many places but especially in the historic central business district of Gaithersburg called "Olde Towne". The east side also includes Lakeforest Mall, City Hall, and the Montgomery County Fair grounds, and Bohrer Park (a well-known joint community recreation center and outdoor water park for kids and families). The west side of the city has many wealthier neighborhoods that were designed with smart growth techniques and embrace New Urbanism. These include the award-winning Kentlands community, the Lakelands community, and the Washingtonian Center (better known as Rio), a popular shopping/business district. Two New Urbanism communities are under construction, including Watkins Mill Town Center (Casey East and West), and the massive "Science City".

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is headquartered in Gaithersburg directly west of I-270. Other major employers in the city include IBM, Lockheed Martin Information Systems and Global Services business area headquarters, AstraZeneca, and the French multinational corporation, Sodexo. Gaithersburg is also the location of the garrison of the United States Army Reserve Legal Command.

The most prominent highways serving Gaithersburg are Interstate 270 and Interstate 370. I-270 is the main highway leading northwest out of metropolitan Washington DC, beginning at Interstate 495 (the Capital Beltway) and proceeding northwestward to Interstate 70 in Frederick. I-370 is a short spur, starting just west of I-270 in Gaithersburg and heading east to its junction with Maryland Route 200. Via MD 200, I-370 connects Gaithersburg with Interstate 95 near Laurel. Maryland Route 355 was the precursor to I-270 and follows a parallel route. It now serves as the main commercial roadway through Gaithersburg and neighboring communities. Other state highways serving Gaithersburg include Maryland Route 117, Maryland Route 119 and Maryland Route 124. Maryland Route 28 passes just outside the Gaithersburg corporate limits.
