Common Spiders Found In Silver Spring MD

There are a number of species of spiders that exist in Silver Spring MD. All spiders have eight legs, two body regions, and some form of venom (although most aren't toxic enough to harm humans). In the wild, spiders are beneficial to the ecosystem. However, when they invade homes, that benefit is left at the door. The two main species to watch out for are:

  • Black widow spider: Easily identified by their shiny black bodies and distinctive red hourglass-shaped mark on their abdomen, black widow spiders have venom that can be dangerous to some people and will bite when they feel threatened.
  • Wolf spider: This spider is dark brown with pale yellow stripes. They also possess powerful bodies, thanks to their running ability. Instead of using webs, wolf spiders chase down their prey. Fortunately, wolf spiders aren't harmful to humans, provided professionals handle them.

How To Identify Spiders In Silver Spring

Spiders, in general, are known for their spindly legs, bulbous abdomens, and the stalking nature of the way they walk, and in Silver Spring, the spiders are no different. Two of the most common and most dangerous spiders in the area are the brown recluse and the black widow. The brown recluse is a light brown color with six eyes and the black widow is a glossy black color with a red hourglass stamp. Both of these spiders are anti-social but will attack if they feel provoked. The daddy long-leg is also known as the cellar spider and is very thin and lanky in appearance. As the name would suggest, these spiders frequent basements and other cool, moist places. The wolf spider is fuzzy and chunky in appearance and is most easily spotted by its exaggerated features that look like no other spider. Why Spiders Invade Silver Spring Homes

As we’ve mentioned, there are a variety of different spider species here in Silver Spring. Whatever species you’re up against, it’s safe to say that no homeowner wants to find any of these eight-legged intruders in their house.
If you’re wondering what brings spiders into your home in the first place, there are a variety of attractants to keep in mind. Spiders enter your home looking for two things - food and shelter. Addressing these sources is a good place to start in controlling spider populations around your house.
Keep in mind the following:

  • Their main food source is insects, so if there are insects in your home, there are likely spiders.
  • Anything that attracts insects to your home will also attract spiders.
  • The presence of spiders is probably indicative of a larger insect infestation.
  • Lack of cleanliness/sanitation around the property is conducive to spider activity.
  • Prefer remote areas that are damp, dark, and out of the way.

Are Spiders In Silver Spring MD Really Dangerous?

Many of us gasp at the sight of spiders. Their long legs and beady little eyes are disturbing, and the webs they weave are invasive and unwelcome. It's normal to be afraid of spider activity on your property, but what if that fear is based on a misconception? The truth is, spiders aren't all that dangerous to humans.

While some spiders do bite and inject their victims with venom, most spiders in Silver Spring are relatively harmless. Spiders help keep local pest populations in check since they feed on insects and other small pests around your property. So, unless you're dealing with a brown recluse or a black widow, there's really nothing to fear.

Although it may not seem like it, spiders are usually more afraid of you than you are of them. Even so, it's understandable why property owners want to avoid a spider infestation at all costs. It's usually indicative of a larger pest problem, as spiders feed on insects and follow them wherever they go. Here at Miche Pest Control, we offer complete spider control and prevention services that promise you year-round protection. Reach out to us today to get started!

How To Get Rid Of Spiders In Silver Spring MD

Spiders cause regular concern among home and business owners. Though they kill other nuisance insects, an overabundance of these creatures proves unpleasant. They hide in dark corners, they’re difficult to control, and they build unsightly webs. To stop these eight-legged pests from becoming a problem in your Silver Spring home or commercial facility, our experts want to provide some easy-to-execute spider prevention tips:

To keep spider populations from developing in your yard, get rid of cluttered areas where they can burrow or build their webs. Avoid overgrown gardens, shrubs, and grass by pruning and cutting regularly.

Eliminate access points that would allow spiders to crawl into your home or business. Place door sweeps on exterior doors, replace ripped screens, place weather stripping around windows and doors, and use a caulking gun to seal spaces in the foundation. Make sure to repair holes along the roofline and place metal mesh covers over vents leading into your property.

Spiders feed on insects, so they will be attracted to properties where there is a lot of insect activity. Whenever you discover spider webs in or around your home clear them away. Removing their webs helps prevent spiders from catching their prey, which will make them less apt to stick around.

Our experts at Miche Pest Control offer routine spider control services for property owners in Silver Spring looking for a foolproof solution to their spider problems.

Are Spiders In Silver Spring Preventable?

Some people are more afraid of spiders than others, but regardless of your fear level, everyone should know about the threat of a spider infestation. Big, small, hairy, or smooth, spiders are attracted to your Silver Spring property, and they can fit into the tiniest cracks and crevices to gain entry. To prevent spiders from entering your property, consider the following tips.

First, it's important to keep other pests and insects off your property, as spiders feed on these creatures and tend to follow wherever their food sources go. Next, you should seal up cracks and crevices with caulk or foam, install door sweeps, and make sure all door and window screens are intact. It's also important to keep your space clean and free of clutter, reducing potential harborage areas.

Silver Spring MD

Silver Spring is a census-designated place (CDP) in southeastern Montgomery County, Maryland, near Washington DC. Although officially unincorporated, in practice it is an edge city. Silver Spring is the fourth most populous place in Maryland, after Baltimore, Columbia, and Germantown, and the second most populous in Montgomery County after Germantown.

The downtown, located next to the northern tip of Washington DC, is the oldest and most urbanized part of the community. Since beginning a significant renaissance in 2004, many new mixed-use developments combining retail, residential, and office space have been built. Downtown is in turn surrounded by several inner suburban residential neighborhoods located inside the Capital Beltway.

Silver Spring takes its name from a mica-flecked spring discovered there in 1840 by Francis Preston Blair, who subsequently bought much of the surrounding land. Acorn Park, south of downtown, is believed to be the site of the original spring.

From west to east, Silver Spring is bisected by four major creeks: Rock Creek, Sligo Creek, Long Branch, and Northwest Branch. Each is surrounded by parks offering hiking trails, playgrounds, picnic areas, and tennis courts. On weekends, road closures in the parks facilitate bicycling.
