What Are Voles?
Voles are a type of rodent and are a common pest in lawns and gardens in Woodbridge VA. Voles are herbivores, and use their sharp front teeth to feed on grass, plants, bulbs, bark, and roots.
At a glance, voles look very similar to mice as they are both small, furry rodents. But upon closer inspection, the vole has unique physical features that let you know they are a vole and not a mouse.
The first thing to look at is the tail. Mice have long, thin tails, while voles have short furry tails.
The body of a vole is "heavier" and more compact than that of a mouse.
Voles have small eyes, and the fur on their head partially hides their ears from view. Mice have large eyes and large ears that stand up off the head.
The Damage Voles Cause In Woodbridge
As mentioned above, voles live underground, building intricate burrow and tunnel systems. Even though voles are small animals, they can cause significant and costly damage in a residential yard. Here is what you should know about damage caused by voles:
- Voles create paths that are about 1 to 2 inches wide.
- Paths created by these animals will almost look like lightning on the ground because of their zig-zag pattern.
- When voles tunnel, they create multiple entryways, which will look like small mounds of dirt scattered around the yard.
- If you have voles in your yard, you might also see dead patches of grass, which can look sun-damaged.
- As they feed on plant roots, they can cause the plants to die.
- They will also chew on young trees and bushes, leaving noticeable gnaw marks.
Also, like other rodents, voles reproduce quickly, having multiple litters in a year, so they can quickly overtake your yard, causing more and more damage over time.
Something else to remember about these pests is that they can carry different diseases, spreading them to people through droppings and urine. Because of this, you also do not want to try and pick up one of these animals.
Whether you have had your landscaping professionally designed and maintained or do it independently, you know just how expensive it can be. With pests like voles in your yard, you run the risk of them damaging ornamental plants, trees, and the turf. So don't let these pests cause you money and stress; look to pest control experts for assistance with removal and control.

Vole Control For Woodbridge Residents
If you are concerned about voles in your yard, you don't have to worry about eliminating them on your own. Miche Pest Control has assisted Woodbridge residents with voles and other critters for years through professional and reliable pest control.
Voles rarely become an issue inside a home, but they can happen. If it does, you shouldn't try to remove them on your own. Miche Pest Control can remove and prevent them from getting back inside by locating accessible entry points.
At Miche Pest Control, we use tamper-resistant bait stations, placing them in vole paths to remove active voles and at the edges of your yard to keep new ones from invading.
While our bait stations will help to prevent voles on your property, we also recommend the following tips to make your yard less appealing to these rodents:
- Keep the foliage and the grass cut to the lowest, healthiest length
- Remove ground cover and weeds
- Clear any debris such as leaf and stick piles
- Fill any ground holes
- Store firewood properly; off the ground near the outer perimeter of your yard
- Place tree guards around young trees
- Remove bird feeders because they can drop seeds, which voles can feed on

Woodbridge is a census-designated place (CDP) in Prince William County, Virginia, located approximately 20 miles south of Washington DC. Bounded by the Occoquan and Potomac rivers, the Woodbridge census-designated place comprises just one portion of the Woodbridge Magisterial District. The census-designated place consists solely of the section north of Occoquan Road and Dawson Beach Road, and east of Interstate 95, but the entirety of zip codes 22191, 22192, and 22193 are typically considered as a part of Woodbridge.
Woodbridge was initially a village composed largely of plantations and later farms and industrial complexes, dating back to at least 1731 when Prince William County was formed out of Stafford County, Virginia. Initially, the first Prince William County Courthouse was erected in Woodbridge owing to its location as halfway between Dumfries, Virginia and Alexandria, Virginia, the two largest cities in (what was then) Prince William County. Later, the Woodbridge postal delivery area became the hub that included Dale City and Lake Ridge, which had previously been forged as a planned community in the 1960s and 1970s. The area takes its name from Thomas Mason's 1795 wooden toll bridge built to supplant the existing ferry, carrying the King's Highway traffic across the Occoquan River. Mason's Woodbridge Plantation was located in the area of the present day Belmont Bay golf course community.
Woodbridge offers a wide range of recreational opportunities for resident and visitors. The Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge is a natural habitat for a variety of plant and animal life including the bald eagles and ospreys. Veteran's Park and Leesylvania State Park are located on the Potomac River and provide swimming, boating, picnic and hiking services. Close by is Rippon Lodge, the oldest house in Prince William County, which is open for tours throughout the summer. Trails at Leesylvania Park lead to the ancestral home of the Lee family.
The 2010 census reconfigured Woodbridge so that the majority of its land area was redesignated Marumsco and Neabsco, Virginia. The southern border of Woodbridge is now Occoquan Road. The area between Occoquan Road and Opitz Boulevard–Rippon Boulevard is now Marumsco. All of the former Woodbridge CDP south of those streets has been designated as Neabsco. However, these areas continue to have postal addresses in "Woodbridge," which is served by a post office in Marumsco.
