How To Identify The Most Common Spiders In Vienna, VA

It's estimated that you’re never more than 10 feet away from a spider because of their sheer prevalence and all of the species that you could encounter. Some of the most common spiders in the area are:

  • Daddy long-legs. Also known as the cellar spider, this species is notable for its long, thin, and spindly legs. They are light brown in coloring and have a small yet bulbous abdomen.
  • Black widow. Perhaps the most iconic spider, this glossy black species is stamped with a red hourglass image and lives in dark and secluded areas of the home.
  • Wolf spider. Almost a caricature of themselves, the wolf spider has chunky, fuzzy legs and big eyes. This species enters homes when temperatures begin to cool off and hunts its prey rather than building webs.
  • Brown recluse. As the name would suggest, this spider is anti-social so while you’re unlikely to encounter them, they’re still there. Identified by their light brown coloring and stamp of a violin image, this spider also has six eyes and the sharpest eyesight.

Are There Dangerous Spiders In Vienna, VA?

While most of the spiders that you may encounter in Vienna are not harmful to your health, there are a few species that could become problematic. To begin, there’s the infamous black widow spider, which tends to lurk in the dark and cool parts of your home. The female of the species will wait in her web for prey to walk by before attacking, but if you disturb her, you may fall victim to her venom. Additionally, the brown recluse spider also has the potential to be venomous if provoked. They live in similar areas to the black widow but can also be found underneath porches and amidst rock piles or stacks of firewood. To protect yourself from spiders venomous and not, contact Miche Pest Control for spider control today.

Five Things You Can Do To Avoid Spiders In Vienna, VA

Keeping spiders out of your Vienna home takes a multi-step approach. Try these five tips in order to limit spider populations:

  1. Secure your home. It’s important to start by filling all of the cracks and openings around your foundation, even the smallest ones. Use materials like caulk for this job and apply weather stripping to the gaps around your doors and windows.
  2. Consider the yard. When looking to make your property less attractive to spiders, always remove leaf piles, store firewood at least 20 feet away from your home, and clear away yard debris.
  3. Aim for cleanliness. One of the things that pests of prey are attracted to the most is a mess. Clean up after crumbs and spills in a thorough fashion, take out the trash often, and remove all clutter from the home.
  4. Address issues with moisture. Whether it’s a leaky gutter or downspout on the exterior of your home or a pipe, faucet, or bathtub that’s gone awry inside your property, rectify these problems immediately. They not only attract spiders but also the pests they prey on, like cockroaches and ants. Homeowners should also keep their basements, attics, and crawl spaces well ventilated and utilize dehumidifiers where needed.
  5. Contact the pros. Other pest problems are often at the root of why spider issues will develop in your property. In order to keep all pests out, you need the assistance of your local pest professional.

At Miche Pest Control, we take a well-rounded approach to keeping your home free from spiders. Not only do we perform quarterly exterior services with interior treatments on an as-needed basis, but we also look for other active infestations that could be contributing to your spider problem.
