  • Smear marks on walls
  • Chewed molding and walls
  • Holes in your walls close to the ground
  • Tiny mounds of pellet-like fecal matter
  • A strong smell that’s akin to ammonia
  • An infestation of ticks, mites, or fleas
  • Development of allergies like teary eyes, scratchy throat, or runny nose

Three Problems Rats Cause In Vienna, VA

When rats start to invade your Vienna home the problems they cause can be significant. Three of the key issues that they cause are:

  1. Other pests. Because of the unsanitary conditions that rats live in before gaining access to your home, they very commonly play host to parasites like mites, fleas, and ticks. Before a rat has ever made their way to your home, they have likely lived in the sewer, waste bins, and the woods. Having a secondary infestation of parasites can pose a health risk to people and pets while also attracting other pests like spiders.
  2. Property damage. Rats, like other rodents, have a near-constant need to chew, which they do in order to keep their front teeth from overgrowing. This can result in serious property damage to your furniture, walls, and personal belongings. It may also look like chewed electrical wiring, which can lead to house fires.
  3. Health risks. Through their fecal matter, saliva, and urine alone, rats are capable of spreading hantavirus, leptospirosis, salmonella, and tularemia. These byproducts can also instigate asthma attacks and allergic reactions. Because rats can be aggressive toward humans, rat-bite fever is known to occur through bites.

Rats are able to acquire everything they need in order to survive in your Vienna home quite easily. This is actually the main reason why rat problems not only occur but why they persist as well. In order to keep these pests from becoming an issue in your home, try the following tips:

  • Trim back any tree branches, shrubs, or hedges that rats may climb in order to gain access to your home.
  • Seal up cracks and openings in your foundation with rat-proof materials like silicone-based caulk, sheet metal, steel wool, and wire mesh.
  • Avoid leaving garages and doors open for extended periods of time.
  • Store food and pantry items in secure and locking containers.
  • Tend to leaky faucets, pipes, toilets, and bathtubs as you notice them.
  • Clean your home often, removing clutter, taking care of spills and crumbs, and vacuuming.
  • Keep your garbage in a bin with a lid and remove the trash on a routine basis. Always check for food residue between uses.
