How To Identify Dangerous Spiders In Springfield, VA

There are various spider species in the Springfield area, and each of them carries venom. When spiders bite, they inject their venom into your skin. The good news is that most spiders don’t have poisonous venom. Depending on the species, spider bites can cause swelling, discomfort, and other adverse reactions, but there are one species, in particular, that is a cause for concern.

The black widow spider is the only poisonous spider species native to Virginia. Their bites are more dangerous than other species, and the reactions they cause can be severe. Here are some black widow characteristics to help you identify dangerous spiders here in Springfield:

  • Prefer remote areas with minimal human activity.
  • Females are black in color with a red spot on their abdomen.
  • Males are brown and rarely emerge from harborage areas.
  • Their neurotoxic venom can affect your nerves and nerve tissues.
  • Bite leaves a pinprick and can lead to several symptoms.
  • Causes muscle aches, cramping, fever, abdominal pain, sweating, etc.

Fortunately, it’s uncommon for someone to die from a spider bite, even from a black widow. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be careful, though. It’s still crucial to address your spider control and prevention needs, and that’s exactly why we’re here.

Why Spiders Invade Springfield Homes

As we’ve mentioned, there are a variety of different spider species here in Springfield. Whatever species you’re up against, it’s safe to say that no homeowner wants to find any of these eight-legged intruders in their house.

If you’re wondering what brings spiders into your home in the first place, there are a variety of attractants to keep in mind. Spiders enter your home looking for two things - food and shelter. Addressing these sources is a good place to start in controlling spider populations around your house.

Keep in mind the following:

  • Their main food source is insects, so if there are insects in your home, there are likely spiders.
  • Anything that attracts insects to your home will also attract spiders.
  • The presence of spiders is probably indicative of a larger insect infestation.
  • Lack of cleanliness/sanitation around the property is conducive to spider activity.
  • Prefer remote areas that are damp, dark, and out of the way.

Spider Control: Four Tips For Springfield Homeowners

Even though most spiders aren’t a real danger to you, you should still do everything in your power to keep them out of your space. Being proactive in your prevention efforts can go a long way in reducing your chances of experiencing spider activity. A good place to start is by eliminating spider attractants around your property. Here are four spider control tips for Springfield homeowners:

  1. Maintain well-trimmed landscaping, and neat vegetation kept at least five feet from the structure.
  2. Seal cracks and crevices with caulk or foam and examine weather stripping to replace them if damaged.
  3. Remove food sources and practice proper food storage, keeping trash outside in sealed containers.
  4. Keep the exterior lights off, and replace outside bulbs with yellow, insect-resistant bulbs.

Even if you remain diligent about all the prevention methods listed above, spiders can infest your property despite your best efforts. They gravitate towards dark, remote areas where they can lay their eggs and hide out, and no matter how hard you try, sometimes these areas are unavoidable. The most effective way to control spiders around your home is to call in the pros at Miche Pest Control. We’re eager to bring you spider-free conditions that last.

Springfield VA

Springfield is a census-designated place (CDP) in Fairfax County, Virginia. Homes and businesses in bordering CDPs including North Springfield, West Springfield, and Newington are usually given a Springfield mailing address. The CDP is a part of Northern Virginia, the most populous region of the Washington DC Metropolitan Area.

Springfield is dominated by the interchange of I-95, I-395, and the Capital Beltway (I-495), known as the Springfield Interchange. The center of the town is at the intersection of Route 644 (Old Keene Mill Road / Franconia Road) and Route 617 (Backlick Road) adjacent to the interchange. A significant commercial district exists around the interchange area, but the rest of the community is primarily residential in character.

According to the US Postal Service, Springfield collectively has four ZIP codes: 22150 (often unofficially referred to as Central Springfield, this is the zip code for the actual Springfield CDP itself), 22151 (North Springfield), 22152 (West Springfield), and 22153 (Newington).

Central Springfield is dominated by the Springfield Interchange, popularly known as the "Mixing Bowl" or the "Melting Pot", a name taken from an earlier interchange near the Pentagon. The interchange includes three Interstates (I-95, I-395, and I-495), with two exits less than a half mile apart, with two roads (Commerce Street and Route 644 (Old Keene Mill Road / Franconia Road)) going over or under I-95 within less than a half mile, and is further complicated by the presence of a separate, reversible high-occupancy vehicle lane passing through the center of two of the interstates.
