Common Damages Voles Can Cause In Silver Spring

Voles may not be particularly dangerous pests to people or pets, but they most certainly have an effect on our yards and gardens in Silver Spring MD. Unlike moles, voles are vegetation eaters that focus on tender grasses, small roots, and young leaves or plant growth. This could significantly damage your current landscaping, or even ruin your gardening crops. With enough activity, voles can even cause dieback in woody ornamentals and young trees, or completely destroy certain patches of turf.

It’s always best to take a stand against voles before their presence is made known in the yard. Partnering with a professional pest control company like Miche Pest Control ensures that voles never have the opportunity to infest, destroy, or harm another plant in your garden.

What Every Silver Spring Property Owner Needs To Know About Voles

Also known as meadow mice, voles are destructive and dangerous pests that not only cause real damage to your property but also pose a real threat to your health and well-being. Here’s what every Silver Spring property owner needs to know about voles:

  • Voles leave feces and urine around your property, causing serious contamination. Whether via bite or contamination, voles expose us to rabies, hantavirus, and other diseases.
  • Voles are prolific breeders; in fact, female voles can produce several litters per year, making it difficult to stay on top of growing vole populations around your property.
  • Voles are active both above and underneath the ground, though they do the majority of their scavenging above ground, feeding on roots, seeds, tubers, and other plant-related materials.
  • Voles appear stocky and round in build, like a potato. They have short hair that is usually black or brown, with a darker colored belly, small feet, short claws, and little sharp teeth.

The main thing to remember about voles is the fact that they can cause severe damage to your yard, feeding on vegetation and bark and kicking up dirt, roots, and grass. As a local property owner, it’s a good idea to be familiar with these destructive intruders.

A Vole Prevention Mini-Handbook For Silver Spring Homeowners

Seeing as they feed on plant-related materials, it makes sense why wood areas full of brush and tall grass commonly draw voles. With this in mind, you should pay attention to vulnerable areas around your property, taking proactive measures when necessary to keep them out of your yard. Here’s a vole prevention guide for Silver Spring homeowners

  • Apply caulk, wood, concrete mix, or expandable foam to fill in cracks and crevices.
  • Get screen covers for vents, crawl spaces, chimneys, and other entry points.
  • Install fencing around your yard that goes at least a foot deep into the ground
  • Seal off entry points and block access to the structure.
  • Use small fencing to protect property perimeter, vegetation, and plants.

These efforts can certainly help you prevent vole entry around your property, but it’s still beneficial to seek out professional pest protection. Miche Pest Control is your go-to source for everything vole-related. Contact us to get your detailed service quote, and we’ll get started as soon as possible.

The Ultimate Guide To Making Your Silver Spring Yard Unattractive to Voles

When it comes to keeping voles away from your home, it’s important to consider what brought them there in the first place. By addressing vole attractants, you can get ahead of the problem. If you want to take preventative action against vole infestation, there are some useful tips to consider. Here’s the ultimate guide to making your Silver Spring yard unattractive to voles:

  • Eliminate sources of cover from around the lawn, like wood piles, compost piles, brush piles, etc.
  • Install monitor sensor lights to scare them off.
  • Mix gravel into the dirt around your lawn, as voles like soft soil that is easy to dig up.
  • Use sprinklers to drown out vole nests.

Silver Spring MD

Silver Spring is a census-designated place (CDP) in southeastern Montgomery County, Maryland, near Washington DC. Although officially unincorporated, in practice it is an edge city. Silver Spring is the fourth most populous place in Maryland, after Baltimore, Columbia, and Germantown, and the second most populous in Montgomery County after Germantown.

The downtown, located next to the northern tip of Washington DC, is the oldest and most urbanized part of the community. Since beginning a significant renaissance in 2004, many new mixed-use developments combining retail, residential, and office space have been built. Downtown is in turn surrounded by several inner suburban residential neighborhoods located inside the Capital Beltway.

Silver Spring takes its name from a mica-flecked spring discovered there in 1840 by Francis Preston Blair, who subsequently bought much of the surrounding land. Acorn Park, south of downtown, is believed to be the site of the original spring.

From west to east, Silver Spring is bisected by four major creeks: Rock Creek, Sligo Creek, Long Branch, and Northwest Branch. Each is surrounded by parks offering hiking trails, playgrounds, picnic areas, and tennis courts. On weekends, road closures in the parks facilitate bicycling.
