What Are Silverfish And How Do They Get Inside Silver Spring Homes?
There are some varieties of pests that only approach homes once in a blue moon. These occasional invaders are increasingly common in Silver Spring homes, taking advantage of our mild weather and various attractant factors. Left to themselves, these creatures quickly begin to build an unwanted presence in or around our homes, much to our chagrin.
One of the most common of these occasional invaders is the humble silverfish. These bugs are small, wingless insects that are silver or gray in color. Silverfish get their unique name from their silvery scales and fish-like movements, which cause them to sway back and forth while they run. These insects are often found in homes with an abundance of paper products, clothing, and other fabrics. Silverfish can also damage wallpaper and books, among other things.
There are a number of ways silverfish can gain access to your home, all based on your household location and unique attractant factors. This primarily includes:
- Cracks and gaps: Check both the exterior and interior of your home for any cracks or gaps. These can be found in the foundation, walls, ceilings, around doors and windows, and in any other areas where two surfaces meet.
- Vents: Vents that are located on the roof or along the sides of your home can also provide entry points for silverfish.
- Clogged drainpipes: If your home has any clogged drainpipes, this can attract silverfish and other pests inside.
If you think you may have a silverfish problem in your home, it's important to take action right away. These pests may become a growing issue and attract other insects to your home. Get in touch with Miche Pest Control for efficient silverfish control that always goes the distance.
Why Silverfish Invade Silver Spring Homes
As you know, silverfish are some of the least welcome insects to infest Silver Spring homes. Often entering homes through cracks and crevices, these creatures drop inside the home in a number of ways, such as through opened packages or boxes, via potted plants, or through unkempt spaces like basements or attics. Once inside, silverfish hide in dark, humid areas behind baseboards, in closets, or under sinks while they plan their next move.
You may know how silverfish break into homes and businesses near Silver Spring, but you may not know why they do so in the first place. If silverfish are starting to become more common around your property, it may be because of:
- High levels of moisture: These pests are attracted to high levels of moisture and can often be found near leaky pipes, sewage systems, or in damp basements or crawlspaces.
- An abundance of food: Silverfish are also drawn to areas where there is an abundance of food. This may include kitchens, pantries, and storage closets.
The good news is that there are a number of things you can do to prevent silverfish from taking up residence in your home, beginning with professional silverfish control from Miche Pest Control. Our team is equipped to apply treatments and prevention steps to any environment, keeping occasional invaders far away from your property.

Are Silverfish In Silver Spring Dangerous?
Most people would say that any insect infestation is dangerous, and in many ways, they would be right. This being said, there are certain types of insects that do not necessarily pose a threat to the safety and integrity of our Silver Spring homes. This includes silverfish, a pest that is considered little more than a nuisance in most environments.
Silverfish are not known to bite, sting, or spread any form of disease. They are not aggressive insects, and they are not venomous in any way. For all intents and purposes, silverfish are perfectly harmless to people and pets.

Silver Spring MD
Silver Spring is a census-designated place (CDP) in southeastern Montgomery County, Maryland, near Washington DC. Although officially unincorporated, in practice it is an edge city. Silver Spring is the fourth most populous place in Maryland, after Baltimore, Columbia, and Germantown, and the second most populous in Montgomery County after Germantown.
The downtown, located next to the northern tip of Washington DC, is the oldest and most urbanized part of the community. Since beginning a significant renaissance in 2004, many new mixed-use developments combining retail, residential, and office space have been built. Downtown is in turn surrounded by several inner suburban residential neighborhoods located inside the Capital Beltway.
Silver Spring takes its name from a mica-flecked spring discovered there in 1840 by Francis Preston Blair, who subsequently bought much of the surrounding land. Acorn Park, south of downtown, is believed to be the site of the original spring.
From west to east, Silver Spring is bisected by four major creeks: Rock Creek, Sligo Creek, Long Branch, and Northwest Branch. Each is surrounded by parks offering hiking trails, playgrounds, picnic areas, and tennis courts. On weekends, road closures in the parks facilitate bicycling.
