What Should Every Resident Of Bethesda, MD Know About Rats?

According to Chapter 39 of the Montgomery County Code, "It shall be unlawful for anyone to allow their property to be infested with rats or to be in such condition as to contribute to an existing or potential rat infestation." Rat control is important, because rats are known carriers of disease; when they are in close proximity to humans, they are a public health concern. They can damage structures and personal items, potentially causing electrical fires by chewing on wires, and are known to contaminate food supplies. The Health Department of Montgomery County MD lists 4 common signs of rats in Bethesda MD:

  1. Burrows - Rats create holes in the ground, generally between 2 and 4 inches in diameter.
  2. Droppings - Rats have fecal droppings that are rounded to tapered in shape on each end. These droppings are between 3/8 and 3/4 inches long, and 1/4 inch across.
  3. Runways - Rats often frequent the same travel areas, creating worn paths in vegetation, close to walls, fences, and walkways as they travel from their nest to the food source(s).
  4. Tracks - Rats will sometimes leave footprints in mud, dust, fresh dirt, or snow. Rat footprints are approximately 1/2 inch across, with 5 toes visible in their prints.

Rats only need a half inch opening to gain entry into a home or another structure. For professional rodent control services, give us a call today!

If you're having issues with rodents in between regular services, just let us know and as needed, we'll go back out in between services at no extra cost.

What Kinds Of Mosquitoes Should Bethesda MD Be Concerned About?

In Bethesda, the three species of mosquitoes that are most concerning from a public health perspective are the Common House Mosquito, the Asian Tiger Mosquito, and the Yellow Fever Mosquito. The Asian Tiger Mosquito and the Common House Mosquito are more common, while the Yellow Fever Mosquito is less common.

Asian Tiger Mosquitoes typically bite during the day, and prefer to lay their eggs in things such as pots, trash cans, bird baths, clogged gutters, and other temporary, small containers of water. They are potentially vectors for Zika, Dengue, and Chikungunya viruses. The best way to prevent these mosquitoes is to proactively remove containers that can serve as breeding grounds, and to ensure your gutters are kept clean year-round.

Common House Mosquitoes typically bite at night, and prefer to lay their eggs in more permanent pools of stagnant water. They are potentially vectors for West Nile Virus. The best way to prevent these mosquitoes is to stock their preferred breeding sites with mosquito fish, and other fish that feed on mosquito larvae.

Less common than the other two species in Bethesda, Yellow Fever Mosquitoes typically bite during the day, and like the Asian Tiger Mosquito are a container-breeding species of mosquito. They are also potentially vectors for Zika, Dengue and Chikungunya viruses.

What Do Homeowners In Bethesda MD Need To Know About Termites?

A home is the average homeowner’s largest investment; in Bethesda, the median home value is approximately $956,000. The termite species that is native to Bethesda is the Eastern Subterranean Termite. Subterranean termites are social insects that nest underground, living in colonies of up to several million individuals that leave their nest to feed on wood. They create complex colonies, with one or more central "headquarters," which are typically found near a food source, such as a buried stump. These headquarters are typically connected to other food sources by a network of underground tunnels. Mature colonies can use food sources that are more than 200 feet apart. Because they are small, they can enter buildings through gaps and cracks less than 1/16th of an inch. Once inside, termites remain hidden in the walls of the structure, feeding until the damage becomes extensive enough to be noticed.

Bethesda MD

Bethesda is an unincorporated, census-designated place in southern Montgomery County, Maryland, located just northwest of Washington DC. It takes its name from a local church, the Bethesda Meeting House, which in turn took its name from Jerusalem's Pool of Bethesda. The National Institutes of Health main campus and the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center are in Bethesda, as are a number of corporate and government headquarters.

As an unincorporated community, Bethesda has no official boundaries. The United States Postal Service defines Bethesda as comprising of the ZIP Codes 20810, 20811, 20813, 20814, 20815, 20816, and 20817. The main commercial corridor that passes through Bethesda is Maryland Route 355 (known as Wisconsin Avenue in Bethesda and as Rockville Pike and Hungerford Drive in more northern communities), which, to the north, connects Bethesda with the communities of North Bethesda and Rockville, ending, after several name changes, in Frederick. Toward the South, Rockville Pike becomes Wisconsin Avenue near the NIH Campus and continues beyond Bethesda through Chevy Chase, Friendship Heights and into Washington DC, ending in Georgetown.

The area commonly known as "Downtown Bethesda" is centered at the intersection of Wisconsin Avenue, Old Georgetown Road and East-West Highway. This intersection is approximately two and one-half miles from Washington DC's western boundary, making Bethesda a close-in suburb of Washington. Other focal points of downtown Bethesda include the Woodmont Triangle, bordered by Old Georgetown Road (Maryland Route 187), Woodmont and Rugby Avenues, and the Bethesda Row, centered at the intersection of Woodmont Avenue and Bethesda Avenue. Much of the dense construction in that area followed the opening of the Bethesda station on the Red Line of the Washington Metro rapid transit system, also located at this intersection and the centerpiece of the Bethesda Metro Center development. The Medical Center Metro stop lies approximately 0.7 mile north of the Bethesda stop, Medical Center, which serves the NIH Campus, the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.

Important medical institutions located in Bethesda include the National Institutes of Health campus, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, and the adjoining Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, as well as a number of other military medical and research institutions. Other federal institutions include the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division.

Bethesda is the home of Congressional Country Club, which is recognized as one of the most prestigious private country clubs in the world. Located in downtown Bethesda is one of the Madonna of the Trail monuments, erected by the National Old Trails Association working in concert with the Daughters of the American Revolution; President Harry S Truman presided over the dedication of the Bethesda monument, on April 19, 1929. Nearby is the Bethesda Post Office. Also starting in the heart of downtown Bethesda, is the Capital Crescent Trail which follows the old tracks of the B&O Railroad stretching from Georgetown, Washington DC, to Silver Spring MD. Walter Reed Medical Center and the Bethesda Theater are two important Art Deco architectural structures in the suburbs surrounding Washington DC.
