The Real Dangers Ticks Pose To McLean Residents

When most McLean residents think of ticks, they think of dangerous illnesses like anaplasmosis, tularemia, and Lyme disease. The most important thing for locals to understand is that not every tick is a carrier of the bacteria that leads to these health risks. There is also no way to tell by looking at a tick whether or not they’re a carrier for these pathogens. That said, because of the potential dangers that ticks pose, it’s crucial that McLean residents take their presence seriously. If you’re bitten by a tick, it’s important to watch out for symptoms like facial paralysis, nausea, joint pain, a stiff neck or back, and rashes. So while not every tick bite will result in a health problem, it is still imperative to take them seriously.

At Miche Pest Control, we work nonstop to protect our community from ticks and the dangers they can lead to. Our tick control is given on a seasonal basis and includes yard fogging and larvicide applications. When our expert technicians treat your property we leave no stone unturned, whether it’s the perimeter of your property or landscaping. These treatments get rid of adult populations as well as juvenile ticks, providing property owners with instant relief as well as long-lasting results. What You Should Know If You're Bitten By A Tick In McLean

Getting bitten by a tick in McLean can be scary, but it doesn’t have to be. If you get bitten by a tick, here is what you should know:

  • Start by caring for yourself. If you get bitten by a tick, the first thing you should do is remove the tick in its entirety.
  • Dispose of the tick by flushing it down the toilet and clean the bite location with soap and water.
  • Not all tick bites are dangerous. In McLean, the only tick that is capable of transmitting the bacteria that leads to Lyme disease is the blacklegged tick, and it’s not entirely known how many of these ticks are actually carriers of this disease.
  • It’s important to monitor yourself. Not everyone who gets bitten by a tick will require medical attention; however, it’s key to look for any of the following symptoms: fever, headache, nausea, muscle pain, and joint swelling.

To protect yourself from ticks on a regular basis, the best thing you can do is turn to professional tick control. At Miche Pest Control, we use methods like yard fogging and larvicide in order to break the cycle of tick problems. During tick season, we’ll treat the perimeter of your home, the foliage on your property, and every nook in between. For more information on tick control, contact us today.

Minimizing Tick Exposure In McLean

Since residents of McLean are not able to tell whether or not a tick they’ve encountered is carrying dangerous bacteria, it’s important to mitigate your exposure to them no matter the situation. One of the first steps that locals can take is by spending less time in areas of tall grass or dense vegetation. With regards to your property, mowing the grass routinely and removing yard debris like leaf piles and fallen tree branches will remove key places where ticks live. If you’re spending time in parks or hiking local trails, it’s always preferable to wear light-colored clothing and long sleeves and long pants. Applying EPA-approved products like DEET may also provide some relief from ticks; however, it’s always imperative to perform a thorough tick inspection on people and pups as well. For McLean residents, another key way to limit your exposure to ticks is by consulting your vet about year-round flea and tick prevention if you have cats and dogs. You should also look to limit rodent and wildlife problems on your property, as they are common hosts to these parasites. And lastly, working with professionals like the team at Miche Pest Control for seasonal tick control is the most reliable way to keep ticks off of your property. McLean VA

McLean is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Fairfax County in Northern Virginia. McLean is home to many diplomats, military, members of Congress, and high-ranking government officials partially due to its proximity to Washington DC, the Pentagon, and the Central Intelligence Agency. It is the location of Hickory Hill, the former home of Ethel Kennedy, the widow of Robert F. Kennedy. It is also the location of Salona, the former home of Light-Horse Harry Lee, the Revolutionary War hero. It is located between the Potomac River and the town of Vienna. McLean is often distinguished by its luxury homes and its nearby high-profit shopping destinations: Tysons Corner Center and Tysons Galleria. The two McLean zip codes – 22101 and 22102 – are among the most expensive ZIP Codes in Virginia and the United States.

The community received its name from John Roll McLean, the former publisher and owner of The Washington Post. Along with Stephen Benton Elkins and French aristocrat Jean-Pierre Guenard, in 1902 he bought the charter for the Great Falls and Old Dominion Railroad. Completed in 1906, it connected the area with Washington DC. McLean named a railroad station after himself, where the rail line (traveling on the present route of Old Dominion Drive) crossed the old Chain Bridge Road. The community itself was founded in 1910, when the communities of Lewinsville and Langley merged.

McLean is located on the Capital Beltway (Interstate 495) in Northern Virginia, central McLean is 8 miles northwest of downtown Washington DC and 9 miles northeast of Fairfax, the county seat. The community lies in the Piedmont upland on the west bank of the Potomac River. The river forms the community's northern and eastern borders, and a number of its smaller tributaries flow north and northeast through the CDP. From west to east, these include Bull Neck Run, Scott Run, Dead Run, Turkey Run, and Pimmit Run.

As an inner suburb of Washington DC, McLean is a part of both the Washington Metropolitan Area and the larger Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area. The CDP includes the unincorporated communities of Langley, Lewinsville, and West McLean, and it borders several other Washington suburbs including: Potomac and Cabin John, Maryland to the north; Brookmont, Maryland to the northeast; Arlington to the southeast; Falls Church to the south; Idylwood, Pimmit Hills, and Tysons Corner to the southwest; Wolf Trap to the west; and Great Falls to the northwest.
