Four Reasons You Do Not Want Rats In Your McLean, VA Home
When rats enter your McLean home, they are far beyond a nuisance. Four key reasons why you want to keep your home rat-free are:
Spread of illness. Rats are a very common disease vector, as they’re known to spread illnesses like hantavirus, rat-bite fever, and leptospirosis all through their urine, fecal matter, and saliva. These byproducts can also be responsible for allergic reactions and asthma attacks when their particles get into the air.
Property damage. Because rats are constantly nesting and have an innate need to chew in order to keep their front teeth from overgrowing, they will chew on anything. Sometimes this might be gnawed electrical wiring, whereas other times it may be your molding, walls, or personal belongings. In the worst-case scenarios, this damage may even lead to house fires.
Other pest problems. These pests are notorious for being hosts to other pests like fleas, ticks, and mites because of the unsanitary conditions that they’re exposed to prior to making their way to your home. Secondary infestations of this nature may mean big health risks for your pets as well as people, with implications ranging from anemia to Lyme disease.
Size of infestations. Where there is one rat, there is very commonly more. Rats are capable of reproducing up to 60 pups each year, with a sizable infestation becoming a reality in just a month or two.

Mini-Guide To Preventing Rats In McLean, VA
Rats get everything they need from unsuspecting McLean homeowners. Whether it’s food, water, or a warm place to build a nest, your home is much more friendly than you might think. In order to keep rats from becoming a problem, try these tips:
- Trim back any overhanging tree branches, hedges, shrubbery, and other landscaping. Rats are adept climbers and may utilize these harborage areas as a bridge to gain access to your home.
- Ensure a secure foundation by sealing up any openings around your home with rodent-proof materials like silicone-based caulk, sheet metal, wire mesh, and steel wool.
- Always store your food and pantry items in secure containers and avoid leaving leftovers on the counter, as well as overripened food.
- Keep your crawl spaces, attic, and basement well-ventilated. Dehumidifiers are also a good solution for other dark corners of the home that may be excessively moist.
- Practice cleanliness around your home by always cleaning up after spills and crumbs, removing areas of clutter, not allowing dishes to pile up, taking out the trash routinely, and disinfecting your surfaces and floors on a regular basis.
- If you notice a leaking pipe, faucet, or bathtub, rectify it completely.

Why Rat Control Is A Must For Every McLean, VA Home
Rats sneak inside McLean homes in ways that are unavoidable. They utilize the sewer system, climb along roofs, and utilize overhanging tree branches in order to gain access to the things they want: food, water, and shelter. Once rats have gained access to your home, they have very little reason to ever leave, as humans give them what they want with little thought to it at all. With the steady flow of food scraps, places to take up shelter, and dripping sinks, there is little reason at all for rats to find a home elsewhere. During this time, they’re able to reproduce up to 60 pups each year. They are also capable of spreading very serious health risks like hantavirus, salmonella, and tularemia through their fecal matter, saliva, and urine. While their rodent relative, the mouse, is more skittish, rats won’t hesitate to confront humans, which is how rat-bite fever occurs. And because they’re rodents, rats have a near-constant need to chew in order to keep their front incisors from growing. This means lots of significant property damage for homeowners that may even lead to house fires.
Needless to say, homeowners want to avoid a rat infestation at all costs. With professional rat control from Miche Pest Control, we can keep these pests out of your home no matter the season. We use a combination of methods like tamper-resistant bait stations and EPA-approved products in order to offer the highest level of protection. McLean is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Fairfax County in Northern Virginia. McLean is home to many diplomats, military, members of Congress, and high-ranking government officials partially due to its proximity to Washington DC, the Pentagon, and the Central Intelligence Agency. It is the location of Hickory Hill, the former home of Ethel Kennedy, the widow of Robert F. Kennedy. It is also the location of Salona, the former home of Light-Horse Harry Lee, the Revolutionary War hero. It is located between the Potomac River and the town of Vienna. McLean is often distinguished by its luxury homes and its nearby high-profit shopping destinations: Tysons Corner Center and Tysons Galleria. The two McLean zip codes – 22101 and 22102 – are among the most expensive ZIP Codes in Virginia and the United States.
The community received its name from John Roll McLean, the former publisher and owner of The Washington Post. Along with Stephen Benton Elkins and French aristocrat Jean-Pierre Guenard, in 1902 he bought the charter for the Great Falls and Old Dominion Railroad. Completed in 1906, it connected the area with Washington DC. McLean named a railroad station after himself, where the rail line (traveling on the present route of Old Dominion Drive) crossed the old Chain Bridge Road. The community itself was founded in 1910, when the communities of Lewinsville and Langley merged.
McLean is located on the Capital Beltway (Interstate 495) in Northern Virginia, central McLean is 8 miles northwest of downtown Washington DC and 9 miles northeast of Fairfax, the county seat. The community lies in the Piedmont upland on the west bank of the Potomac River. The river forms the community's northern and eastern borders, and a number of its smaller tributaries flow north and northeast through the CDP. From west to east, these include Bull Neck Run, Scott Run, Dead Run, Turkey Run, and Pimmit Run.
As an inner suburb of Washington DC, McLean is a part of both the Washington Metropolitan Area and the larger Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area. The CDP includes the unincorporated communities of Langley, Lewinsville, and West McLean, and it borders several other Washington suburbs including: Potomac and Cabin John, Maryland to the north; Brookmont, Maryland to the northeast; Arlington to the southeast; Falls Church to the south; Idylwood, Pimmit Hills, and Tysons Corner to the southwest; Wolf Trap to the west; and Great Falls to the northwest.
