Everything That Attracts Wasps To Gaithersburg Yards

Before we talk about what attracts wasps to Gaithersburg yards, we should first tell you about the types of wasps common in our area and how they differ from other stinging insects.

Here you will also see hornets listed as wasps in our area; this is because hornets are a type of wasp.

Bald-Faced Hornets:

This species ranges between 1/2 to 5/8 an inch long and looks similar to yellow jackets with a black body and mostly white face. Bald-faced hornets aren't true hornets but are named so because of their size and behavior.

Cicada Killer Wasps:

This species is large, growing up to 2 inches long. They are black with yellow markings and smoky brown wings. Cicada killer wasps are a solitary species, so they don't live in a colony.

European Hornets:

Another large species grows between 3/4 to 1 1/2 inches long with long, brown bodies and an abdomen with yellow stripes, and their face is pale. European hornets are the only true hornet in North America.

Mud Daubers:

This species grows between 1/2 to a little over 1 inch long, and they are black and sometimes have pale markings or a metallic look. Mud daubers are a solitary species known for their thread-like waist.

Paper Wasps:

These are multiple species known for making nests out of paper-like material. They range between 5/8 to 3/4 an inch long and are brownish with yellow or reddish markings.

Yellow Jackets:

This species is about 3/8 to 5/8 an inch long and have yellow and black banding on their body and the same colors on their heads.

Now that you can identify the wasps in our area, please continue reading to learn what attracts them from our Miche Pest Control experts.

All The Ways You Attract Wasps To Your Gaithersburg Yard

Like bees, wasps are pollinators, feeding on plant materials. However, they are also predators that consume other insects, spiders, aphids, caterpillars, and more. As predators, wasps play an essential role in the ecosystem by controlling insect populations, which is another reason they might be attracted to your yard.

Here are all the ways you could be attracting wasps to your Gaithersburg yard:

As previously mentioned, wasps are predators, so other insect problems in your yard attract them. But they are also attracted to flowers, sugary liquids, and protein-rich foods. These food sources can be in the form of fallen fruit, un-rinsed soda cans, food debris from grilling, and more.

Depending on the species, wasps will look for different locations to build their nests. These places are usually close to food sources and protection from predators. In your yard, overgrown trees, ground holes, stumps, logs, open garbage cans, and cracks in your home's exterior can provide shelter for these pests.

If you think your yard is attracting wasps, don't wait to call Miche Pest Control for assistance with wasp prevention.

Are The Wasps In Gaithersburg Dangerous?

Sometimes wasps are categorized with other stinging insects such as bees, but when it comes to the dangers these pests pose, bees don't compare.

Most bee species are docile and non-aggressive; in contrast, wasps are known for their aggressiveness. Generally, social wasps are more dangerous than solitary wasps. Their territorial nature means wasps will attack if they feel threatened, delivering multiple painful stings thanks to their smooth stingers.

For many people, a sting from a single wasp will be painful and result in some mild swelling and irritation. But for those allergic, a wasp sting can lead to anaphylaxis, so ensure you continually monitor symptoms if you or someone else has been stung.

To protect you and your family against wasps, look to Miche Pest Control for the necessary treatments to have a wasp-free yard.

Gaithersburg MD

Gaithersburg, officially the City of Gaithersburg, is a city in Montgomery County, Maryland. Gaithersburg is the fourth-largest incorporated city in Maryland, behind Baltimore, Frederick, and Rockville. Gaithersburg is located to the northwest of Washington DC, and is considered a suburb and a primary city within the Washington–ArlingtonAlexandria, DC–VA–MD–WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. Gaithersburg was incorporated as a town in 1878 and as a city in 1968. Gaithersburg is noted for its ethnic and economic diversity; WalletHub in 2016 ranked it first among the 313 largest U.S. cities for ethnic diversity and second for social class diversity.

Gaithersburg is divided into east and west sections, separated by Interstate 270. The eastern section of the city is older and is the original portion of the town before more recent growth. Landmarks and buildings from that time can still be seen in many places but especially in the historic central business district of Gaithersburg called "Olde Towne". The east side also includes Lakeforest Mall, City Hall, and the Montgomery County Fair grounds, and Bohrer Park (a well-known joint community recreation center and outdoor water park for kids and families). The west side of the city has many wealthier neighborhoods that were designed with smart growth techniques and embrace New Urbanism. These include the award-winning Kentlands community, the Lakelands community, and the Washingtonian Center (better known as Rio), a popular shopping/business district. Two New Urbanism communities are under construction, including Watkins Mill Town Center (Casey East and West), and the massive "Science City".

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is headquartered in Gaithersburg directly west of I-270. Other major employers in the city include IBM, Lockheed Martin Information Systems and Global Services business area headquarters, AstraZeneca, and the French multinational corporation, Sodexo. Gaithersburg is also the location of the garrison of the United States Army Reserve Legal Command.

The most prominent highways serving Gaithersburg are Interstate 270 and Interstate 370. I-270 is the main highway leading northwest out of metropolitan Washington DC, beginning at Interstate 495 (the Capital Beltway) and proceeding northwestward to Interstate 70 in Frederick. I-370 is a short spur, starting just west of I-270 in Gaithersburg and heading east to its junction with Maryland Route 200. Via MD 200, I-370 connects Gaithersburg with Interstate 95 near Laurel. Maryland Route 355 was the precursor to I-270 and follows a parallel route. It now serves as the main commercial roadway through Gaithersburg and neighboring communities. Other state highways serving Gaithersburg include Maryland Route 117, Maryland Route 119 and Maryland Route 124. Maryland Route 28 passes just outside the Gaithersburg corporate limits.
