Is There More Than One Type Of Mosquito In Gaithersburg?
To most people, all mosquitoes are the same. And even though one mosquito might be just as annoying as the next, there are different types of mosquitoes in Gaithersburg, consisting of:
- Aedes albopictus, the Asian tiger mosquito
- Culex pipiens, the house mosquito
- Culex fatigans, the southern mosquito
- Aedes aegypti, the yellow mosquito
Each species varies in size, color, and behavior, with some biting at night and others during the day. They also differ in the diseases they are vectors of, including West Nile virus, dengue, chikungunya, and encephalitis. Although this is the case, it's difficult for the average person to tell them apart.
You should approach all mosquito problems the same and have our professionals at Miche Pest Control help you keep this pest out of your yard.
Are You Ready For Another Early Mosquito Season In Gaithersburg?
Have you noticed mosquitoes have been active earlier in the past few years? If so, you aren't alone. Because of weather factors, mosquito season starts earlier than it used to, with warmer temperatures allowing them to thrive.
It's never too early to get started preparing for mosquito season, which you can do by using these expert-recommended prevention tips:
Eliminate Breeding Sites:
Mosquitos only need a shallow amount of water to lay their eggs, so you should clear any rainwater and fill in ground holes. Also, keep garbage cans closed, remove debris that can hold water, unclog gutters, and use filters in pools and other water features.
Eliminate Harborage Areas:
Mosquitoes need shade to survive the hottest parts of the day, so you should keep your grass cut short, trim shrubs and foliage, and remove debris from your yard.
Eliminate Food Sources:
Only female mosquitoes require blood meals to reproduce, while males and females feed on plant nectar for nutrients. Limiting nectar-producing plants can make your yard less attractive to this pest.

How To Limit Your Mosquito Exposure Risk In Gaithersburg
If it seems like an endless number of products claim to keep mosquitoes away, that's because there are! As we approach spring and fall weather, you can't walk into most pharmacies, hardware, grocery, or outdoor stores without coming face-to-face with a display advertising mosquito repellant.
While these products might offer some relief to annoying mosquitos, they won't be effective if you aren't practicing the following:
- Making Yourself Less Attractive: Some things like having blood type-O or being pregnant make you more attractive to mosquitoes and can't be changed. But other things, like your scent, sweat, and clothing, can be changed. Before going outside, take a shower to rinse off any sweat, don't use any personal products with floral or sweet scents, and wear tight-knit and light-colored fabric.
- Plan Your Time Outside: Mosquitoes struggle to survive during the day because they become dehydrated in the sun and are naturally less active during the daytime. So try to avoid being outside before dawn and after dusk.
- Use Their Weaknesses Against Them: Mosquitoes aren't strong at flying, so fans help keep this pest away from you while you're outside.

The Trick To Keeping Mosquitoes Away From Your Gaithersburg Property
Besides removing the factors that attract mosquitoes, you can also utilize the things that will deter them, like:
Allowing predators such as spiders, birds, bats, dragonflies, and frogs to live on your property will help keep mosquito populations under control. However, this method will not entirely solve your problem and can be problematic as these predators cause concerns as pests.
Plants that keep mosquitoes away include marigold, lavender, catnip, rosemary, citronella, mint, basil, allium, sage, and more. Using these plants is a great way to add color to your yard without making it a magnet for many pests, including mosquitoes.
Get rid of mosquitoes with Miche Pest Control's mosquito control services, which provide yard fogging for quick relief, larvicide application, and high-quality products that produce long-lasting effects. Gaithersburg, officially the City of Gaithersburg, is a city in Montgomery County, Maryland. Gaithersburg is the fourth-largest incorporated city in Maryland, behind Baltimore, Frederick, and Rockville. Gaithersburg is located to the northwest of Washington DC, and is considered a suburb and a primary city within the Washington–Arlington–Alexandria, DC–VA–MD–WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. Gaithersburg was incorporated as a town in 1878 and as a city in 1968. Gaithersburg is noted for its ethnic and economic diversity; WalletHub in 2016 ranked it first among the 313 largest U.S. cities for ethnic diversity and second for social class diversity.
Gaithersburg is divided into east and west sections, separated by Interstate 270. The eastern section of the city is older and is the original portion of the town before more recent growth. Landmarks and buildings from that time can still be seen in many places but especially in the historic central business district of Gaithersburg called "Olde Towne". The east side also includes Lakeforest Mall, City Hall, and the Montgomery County Fair grounds, and Bohrer Park (a well-known joint community recreation center and outdoor water park for kids and families). The west side of the city has many wealthier neighborhoods that were designed with smart growth techniques and embrace New Urbanism. These include the award-winning Kentlands community, the Lakelands community, and the Washingtonian Center (better known as Rio), a popular shopping/business district. Two New Urbanism communities are under construction, including Watkins Mill Town Center (Casey East and West), and the massive "Science City".
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is headquartered in Gaithersburg directly west of I-270. Other major employers in the city include IBM, Lockheed Martin Information Systems and Global Services business area headquarters, AstraZeneca, and the French multinational corporation, Sodexo. Gaithersburg is also the location of the garrison of the United States Army Reserve Legal Command.
The most prominent highways serving Gaithersburg are Interstate 270 and Interstate 370. I-270 is the main highway leading northwest out of metropolitan Washington DC, beginning at Interstate 495 (the Capital Beltway) and proceeding northwestward to Interstate 70 in Frederick. I-370 is a short spur, starting just west of I-270 in Gaithersburg and heading east to its junction with Maryland Route 200. Via MD 200, I-370 connects Gaithersburg with Interstate 95 near Laurel. Maryland Route 355 was the precursor to I-270 and follows a parallel route. It now serves as the main commercial roadway through Gaithersburg and neighboring communities. Other state highways serving Gaithersburg include Maryland Route 117, Maryland Route 119 and Maryland Route 124. Maryland Route 28 passes just outside the Gaithersburg corporate limits.
