How Dangerous Are Crickets In Gaithersburg Homes?

If you have been outside on any late summer night, you have likely heard crickets chirping. Often, this sound fades into background noise after a while, but sometimes, the chirping becomes constant and overwhelming. While this is what most people know about crickets, these pests are also known for other problems they cause.

Although considered chiefly nuisance pests, crickets create other issues when they infest, such as:

  • Illness: Coming into contact with cricket feces can spread salmonella and E. coli. Even though crickets won't break the skin when they bite, they can irritate the skin and cause a rash.
  • Property damage: Crickets feed on almost anything, and when they get inside, they chew on the wallpaper, clothes, paper, leather, plants, wood, and more, damaging belongings.
  • Yard damage: Outside, crickets eat plants, flowers, seeds, grasses, and fruits, which results in costly damage.

Call Miche Pest Control for removal and prevention if you prefer not to deal with crickets and the damages they inflict.

Why Do I Have A Cricket Problem In My Gaithersburg Home?

Crickets aren't usually a problem indoors, but they can live in high populations outside, leading to them finding their way inside. To prevent this from occurring on your property, you should know how you might be attracting them in the first place.

First, you could be attracting crickets with exterior lights, and once they are close to your home, they can find a way inside through cracks, gaps, and other openings. Accessible entry points make it easier for crickets and other pests to get inside and forage for food. Crickets aren't picky eaters and might find food sources such as plants and materials like silks, wools, cotton, wood, and much more.

Warmth and moisture make your home more appealing to crickets, so if your home experiences leaks, flooding, or other water issues, you could be providing the perfect environment for these pests.

If you think your home is susceptible to crickets or are experiencing an active problem, don't wait to call us at Miche Pest Control.

A Complete Guide To Cricket Control For Gaithersburg Property Owners

Crickets are sometimes confused for grasshoppers and other similar pests, likely because they belong to the same order of insects. The most common cricket species in our area are house crickets, which are identifiable by the following traits:

  • Light yellowish-brown with three dark bands on the head
  • About 3/4 to 7/8 an inch long
  • Long body with six legs and long threadlike antennae
  • Wings and can fly but prefer to crawl

With any pest, it's best not to rely on DIY methods as they are more costly and time-consuming. Instead, you can work with pest control experts for identification, removal, and prevention.

Gaithersburg MD

Gaithersburg, officially the City of Gaithersburg, is a city in Montgomery County, Maryland. Gaithersburg is the fourth-largest incorporated city in Maryland, behind Baltimore, Frederick, and Rockville. Gaithersburg is located to the northwest of Washington DC, and is considered a suburb and a primary city within the Washington–ArlingtonAlexandria, DC–VA–MD–WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. Gaithersburg was incorporated as a town in 1878 and as a city in 1968. Gaithersburg is noted for its ethnic and economic diversity; WalletHub in 2016 ranked it first among the 313 largest U.S. cities for ethnic diversity and second for social class diversity.

Gaithersburg is divided into east and west sections, separated by Interstate 270. The eastern section of the city is older and is the original portion of the town before more recent growth. Landmarks and buildings from that time can still be seen in many places but especially in the historic central business district of Gaithersburg called "Olde Towne". The east side also includes Lakeforest Mall, City Hall, and the Montgomery County Fair grounds, and Bohrer Park (a well-known joint community recreation center and outdoor water park for kids and families). The west side of the city has many wealthier neighborhoods that were designed with smart growth techniques and embrace New Urbanism. These include the award-winning Kentlands community, the Lakelands community, and the Washingtonian Center (better known as Rio), a popular shopping/business district. Two New Urbanism communities are under construction, including Watkins Mill Town Center (Casey East and West), and the massive "Science City".

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is headquartered in Gaithersburg directly west of I-270. Other major employers in the city include IBM, Lockheed Martin Information Systems and Global Services business area headquarters, AstraZeneca, and the French multinational corporation, Sodexo. Gaithersburg is also the location of the garrison of the United States Army Reserve Legal Command.

The most prominent highways serving Gaithersburg are Interstate 270 and Interstate 370. I-270 is the main highway leading northwest out of metropolitan Washington DC, beginning at Interstate 495 (the Capital Beltway) and proceeding northwestward to Interstate 70 in Frederick. I-370 is a short spur, starting just west of I-270 in Gaithersburg and heading east to its junction with Maryland Route 200. Via MD 200, I-370 connects Gaithersburg with Interstate 95 near Laurel. Maryland Route 355 was the precursor to I-270 and follows a parallel route. It now serves as the main commercial roadway through Gaithersburg and neighboring communities. Other state highways serving Gaithersburg include Maryland Route 117, Maryland Route 119 and Maryland Route 124. Maryland Route 28 passes just outside the Gaithersburg corporate limits.
