What Do Crickets In Fredericksburg Look Like?

Seeing a cricket or two around your Fredericksburg property may not be much cause for concern, but this pest can quickly grow out of control and cause several problems. An important part of cricket control is learning what this pest looks like so you can correctly identify and eliminate them. In Fredericksburg, two main types of crickets are likely to be encountered around your property – camel crickets and field crickets.

Camel crickets are relatively large in appearance. They are typically greyish brown in color and have a humped back, which earns them their name of ‘camel cricket.’ This insect has poor eyesight, which they make up for with long antennae to help themselves find their way. Camel crickets are known for jumping at things they determine as threats, a fairly frightening sight to most Fredericksburg residents, and this pest cannot chirp like other cricket species.

On the other hand, field crickets are a pretty noisy cricket species. They have shorter, smaller bodies and are typically flatter with brown or black coloration. Field crickets are also powerful jumpers and will leap at things they determine threats, which is a serious problem when you accidentally disturb a large infestation around your home.

When Are Crickets Most Active?

Crickets are nocturnal insects that do most of their eating, mating, and chirping at nighttime. In Fredericksburg, crickets are most active during the warmer spring and summer months and into early fall. Once temperatures begin to drop, more and more crickets will seek shelter from the cold inside homes, sheds, and other structures.

Are Crickets Dangerous?

While it is possible for crickets to carry diseases, it is quite rare for them to bite humans and they are not known to carry any diseases that are fatal to humans.

The Trick To Keeping Crickets Out Of Your Fredericksburg Home

The best way to get rid of crickets is to prevent them from coming inside in the first place. Below are some things everyone can do now to prevent the local crickets from moving inside your home this fall:

  • Vacuum regularly: Using a vacuum wand for those hard-to-reach places will suck up any existing crickets and their eggs, ruining their chance to keep an infestation going.
  • Seal up holes: One of the main ways crickets are able to gain access to your home is through the holes, cracks, and crevices in your home’s walls and foundations. Locate these potential access points and plug them up so crickets and other pests can’t use them to get inside your home.
  • Change your lights: Crickets love your outside lights and are attracted to the glow. One way to reduce the appeal is to change your bulbs to yellow bulbs or sodium vapor lamps.
  • Clean your yard up: Regularly maintain your yard by clearing out the organic debris such as wood piles, stumps, and logs, as crickets are likely to be found inside these.

At Miche Pest Control, our pest control technicians have the training required to narrow down exactly how these pests are getting inside your home, and the treatments we use will eliminate existing infestations and prevent new ones from starting up. Contact us today to get started.

Fredericksburg VA

Fredericksburg is an independent city located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Located near where the Rappahannock River crosses the Atlantic Seaboard fall line, Fredericksburg was a prominent port in Virginia during the colonial era. During the Civil War, Fredericksburg, located halfway between the capitals of the opposing forces, was the site of the Battle of Fredericksburg and Second Battle of Fredericksburg. These battles are preserved, in part, as the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park. More than 10,000 African-Americans in the region left slavery for freedom in 1862 alone, getting behind Union lines. Tourism is a major part of the economy. Approximately 1.5 million people visit the Fredericksburg area annually, including the battlefield park, the downtown visitor center, events, museums, art shops, galleries, and many historical sites.

Fredericksburg is home to several major retail and commercial centers including Central Park (as of 2004, the second-largest mall on the East Coast) and the Spotsylvania Towne Centre, located in Spotsylvania County adjacent to the city. Major employers include the University of Mary Washington (named for the Fredericksburg resident who was the mother of George Washington), Mary Washington Healthcare, and GEICO. Many Fredericksburg-area residents commute to work by car, bus, and rail to Washington DC and Richmond, as well as Fairfax, Prince William, and Arlington counties.

Fredericksburg is part of the boundary between the Piedmont and Tidewater regions, and as such is located on the fall line, as evident on the Rappahannock River. US 1, US 17, and I-95 all pass through the city, which is located 53 miles south of downtown Washington DC and 58 miles north of Richmond. The city is bounded on the north and east by the Rappahannock River; across the river is Stafford County. The city is bounded on the south and west by Spotsylvania County.

Fredericksburg is traversed by a series of rural and suburban four-lane highways and a multitude of small, two-lane roads. The primary highway serving Fredericksburg is Interstate 95, which connects northward to Washington DC and southward to Richmond, Virginia. Among the major arterial roads is US Route 17, providing northwest-southeast transportation across the region. Through Fredericksburg, I-95 and US 17 are concurrent, though a local business route provides local access to downtown. Route 3 (Plank Road) is a major east–west route that connects downtown Fredericksburg (via the Blue and Gray Parkway bypass), southern Stafford and King George counties, and Route 301 to the east with the large shopping centers, Spotsylvania Town Center and Central Park. To the west, Route 3 reaches Culpeper, where it meets Route 29 and Route 15.
