Tick Prevention Solutions For Burke Residents

Between the months of March and October, encountering ticks in Burke is a very common occurrence. Whether you spend time in the woods or have pets, tick issues can develop very easily. In order to prevent ticks from being an issue, try the following techniques:

  • Tend to your property. In order to keep ticks away from your home, it’s important to make the area around your home as unattractive to them as possible. This means trimming back trees to reduce shade, clearing leaf piles, and turning over standing water.
  • Protect yourself. Ticks are most readily found in areas of tall grass and dense vegetation, so if you’re going for a hike or outing outside, wear light colors in long sleeves and long pants. It’s also important to always perform a thorough tick check after spending time outside.
  • Talk to your vets. Cats and dogs are some of the most common hosts for ticks and one of the fastest ways that ticks problems develop inside the home, so consider speaking with your veterinarian about year-round tick and flea control. After spending time outside, always check your pets for ticks.

Tick Control: Five Things Burke Property Owners Should Know

Keeping yourself protected from ticks during their season is one of the most important things you can do. Here are five things Burke VA homeowners should know about tick control:

  1. Rodents and wildlife spread ticks. Some of the most common hosts for ticks are wildlife and rodents, so limiting their populations on your property is key. Try methods like motion-detected sprinklers and porch lights.
  2. Humans can also perpetuate tick problems. Any time that you spend in wooded areas or pockets of tall grass are opportunities for attracting ticks. Consider applying EPA-approved products like DEET and wear long sleeves and long pants.
  3. Your landscaping counts. Ticks are drawn to shady, cool, and moist areas around your property, so be sure to trim back overhanging trees and shrubs, while also removing yard debris that accumulates.
  4. Consider your pets. Cats and dogs are also very common hosts for ticks, so speak with your vet about tick and flea prevention.
  5. Always work with a pro. The dangers that ticks pose are simply not worth it. For the most reliable form of tick control, it’s always best to consult your local pest expert.
