What Are Voles?

Voles are a type of rodent and are a common pest in lawns and gardens. Voles are herbivores, and use their sharp front teeth to feed on grass, plants, bulbs, bark, and roots.

At a glance, voles look very similar to mice as they are both small, furry rodents. But upon closer inspection, the vole has unique physical features that let you know they are a vole and not a mouse.

The first thing to look at is the tail. Mice have long, thin tails, while voles have short furry tails.

The body of a vole is "heavier" and more compact than that of a mouse.

Voles have small eyes, and the fur on their head partially hides their ears from view. Mice have large eyes and large ears that stand up off the head.

Why Arlington Is The Perfect Place For Voles

Plenty of soft soil, dense vegetation, and wilderness areas make Arlington the perfect breeding ground for voles. Not only do they have ample yards and gardens to infest, but their ability to operate under the radar makes their presence only noticeable post-infestation.

Unfortunately, even prevention steps cannot fully reduce your risks of a vole infestation. These pests are a common sight in virtually every Arlington yard and garden, and can only be controlled or dissuaded; not entirely eliminated.

Thankfully, there are some ways to find, remove, and restore your lawn to its former vole-free glory, beginning with the services of Miche Pest Control. Our professionals use a variety of traps, products, and management techniques to remove voles currently present on your property. Next, we move forward with professional vole prevention techniques to stop the pests from returning in the future. Finally, we continue to follow up with your property to ensure your ongoing protection against voles.

How Can You Tell If You Have Voles In Your Arlington Yard?

Voles are a small, often overlooked pest thanks to their size, brown-black coloration that blends into the outdoors, and their preference for living in burrows and shallow underground tunnels. Vole control is dependent on spotting this pest in your yard. Below are some key things to watch for when evaluating whether you have a vole issue or not in your Arlington yard.

  • You may see small trails in your yard no more than one to two inches deep as this pest travels on the same paths above ground.
  • Collapsed plants will appear in your yard as voles chew through the roots.
  • The ground in your yard can feel spongey due to voles digging tunnels underneath the surface level.
  • You may see voles out and about in your yard as they run from burrow to burrow.
  • If you have a cat, they may spend lots of time staring at spots in your yard and can catch voles from time to time.

If you’ve noticed one or more of these signs around your yard, it is time for you to invest in vole control in Arlington. Turn to Miche Pest Control for help.

Are The Voles In Arlington, VA Dangerous?

Voles are mainly outdoor pests. Unlike many other rodents, they usually don't move into our homes. We rarely come in close contact with voles, so they don't pose significant health risks.

The biggest concern with voles is their ability to damage our lawns, trees, gardens, and landscaping plants.

Small trees and shrubs are very susceptible to vole damage because voles use their sharp front incisors to chew on the bark at the bottom of them.

These small rodents will damage plants in gardens, particularly favoring cabbages, lettuce, carrots, spinach, tomatoes, and potatoes.

Voles create unsightly trails in lawns by feeding on grass and using the same paths to travel through day after day.

Voles dig into and damage lawns to build shallow burrows, underground nests, and food storage areas.

Arlington VA

Arlington County is a county in the Commonwealth of Virginia, often referred to simply as Arlington, Virginia. The county is situated in Northern Virginia on the southwestern bank of the Potomac River directly across from the District of Columbia, of which it was once a part, under the name Alexandria County. The county is coterminous with the U.S. Census Bureau's census-designated place of Arlington. Arlington is considered to be the second-largest "principal city" of the Washington metropolitan area. If it were incorporated as a city, Arlington would be the fourth most-populous city in the state.

With a land area of 26 square miles, Arlington is the geographically smallest self-governing county in the US, and by reason of state law regarding population density, it has no incorporated towns within its borders. Arlington is home to the Pentagon, Reagan National Airport, and Arlington National Cemetery. In academia, the county contains Marymount University, George Mason University's Antonin Scalia Law School, the administrative offices buildings and graduate programs for the Schar School of Policy and Government and the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution, as well as satellite campuses of the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech.

The area that now constitutes Arlington County was originally part of Fairfax County in the Colony of Virginia. Land grants from the British monarch were awarded to prominent Englishmen in exchange for political favors and efforts at development. One of the grantees was Thomas Fairfax, 6th Lord Fairfax of Cameron, who lends his name to both Fairfax County and the City of Fairfax. The county's name "Arlington" comes via Henry Bennet, Earl of Arlington, a Plantation along the Potomac River, and Arlington House, the family residence on that property. George Washington Parke Custis, the grandson of First Lady Martha Washington, acquired this land in 1802. The estate was eventually passed down to Mary Anna Custis Lee, wife of General Robert E. Lee. The property later became Arlington National Cemetery during the American Civil War, and eventually lent its name to present-day Arlington County.
